The monument is on the left of the road into Mathern from the A48. It takes the form of a cross standing on an octagonal base, atop a three-step octagonal plinth. The names are recorded on the octagonal base. There are 10 names from the First World War and 1 from the Second World War. The names are recorded chronologically around the base. The valediction is also written around the base.

Private, Royal Marine Light Infantry assigned H.M.S. Aboukir. Son of Thomas and Eliza Arnold. Died 22nd September 1914 aged 21. No known grave. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

Private, "D" Company, 6th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Son of John Maynard Closs and Elizabeth Closs, of Mathern, Chepstow, Mon. Died 9th April 1916 aged 21. No known grave. Commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.

Private, South Wales Border Regiment. Died 30th July 1916. (Not confirmed by CWGC).

Private, 8th Battalion, the Welsh Regiment. Died 20th September 1918. (Not confirmed by CWGC).

Private, 2nd/9th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Died 9th October 1917 aged 20. Son of William and Laura Jones, of 94, Brecon Rd., Hirwaun. Aberdare. No known grave. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.

Private, 2nd Battalion, the Welsh Regiment. Died 9th October 1916 aged 25. Son of James and Amelia Luckett, of The Row, Shirenewton, Chepstow. Native of Mathern, Chepstow. Buried at St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

Private, 12th Battalion, the Manchester Regiment. Died 25th April 1918 aged 19. Son of Albert and Elizabeth Jane Prickett, of Mathern, near Chepstow, Mon. Buried at Forceville Communal Cemetery Extension, near Albert, France.

Captain, 1st Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment. Died 8th May 1915 aged 24. Son of Joseph Wilfrid Stanton and Blanche Isabel Stanton, of Mathern House, Chepstow, Mon. No known grave. Commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium..

Sapper, 56th Field Company, Royal Engineers. Died 25th November 1914 aged 28. Son of John and Mary Warlow, of Chepstow, Mon. Buried at Cement House Cemetery, Langemark, Belgium.
