EAST AND WEST WRETHAM WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is to be found in the grounds of the parish church East Wretham. It takes the form of a stone cross mounted on a plinth with a two stepped base; it covers both East and West Wretham. There are twenty-eight names for World War 1 and one for World War 2 listed by surname, rank, initials, battalion and Regiment or service. An additional plaque at the base of the front face of the memorial reads:

"THIS PLAQUE COMMEMORATES
THE VISIT BY SURVIVORS OF THE
359TH FIGHTER GROUP/ IN REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE
WHO SERVED AND DIED IN/ THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM
3RD AUGUST 1985"

Ordinary Seaman J63650, H.M.S. Pembroke, Royal Navy. Died from disease in Welcome hospital, Chatham, 15 January 1917. Born 6 February 1898 in Thetford, Norfolk. Son of Walter Kidd, East Wretham, Thetford, Norfolk. In the 1901 census he was aged 3, born East Wretham, Norfolk, son of Walter and Alice Rhoda Kidd, resident Keepers Corner, East Wretham, Thetford, Norfolk. In the 1911 census he was aged 13, born East Wretham, Norfolk, at school, son of Walter and Alice Rhoda Kidd, resident Keepers Corner, East Wretham, Thetford, Norfolk. Farm labourer by trade. Enlisted 21 December 1916 for the duration of the hostilities, height 5 feet 8½ inches, chest 36 inches, brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion. Buried north-west of the church in ST. ETHELBERT CHURCHYARD, EAST WRETHAM, Norfolk.

Private 13920, 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Died of wounds 16 September 1916. Aged 27. Born Shetford, Norfolk, enlisted Bury St. Edmunds. Son of William Elijah and Louisa Jane Kidd, of West Wretham, Thetford, Norfolk; husband of Ethel Mary Kidd, of 17, Lower Vauxhall, Wolverhampton. Private, 1st Norfolk Regiment - Born 17 July 1892. Admitted to East Wretham With West Wretham School 15 June 1896, son of Henry Nichols, resident resident Barracks, Village, West Wretham, left 30 June 1906. In the 1901 census he was aged 8, born Norfolk, son of Henry and Lucy Nichols, resident Barracks, Village, West Wretham, Thetford, Norfolk. In the 1911 census he was aged 19, born Wretham, Norfolk, a Domestic under gardener, working at The Bothy, Lynford Gardens, Mundford, Lynford, Norfolk. *** Have not found military records for this man as yet ***

Marc Andrew Patrick

Second Lieutenant, "C" Battery, 121st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 1 July 1917. Aged 20. Baptised 14 July 1897 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, son of Saxton and Celia Noble. Son of Saxton and Celia Noble, of Kent House, Knightsbridge, London, and Wortham Hall, Norfolk. Educated Eton College. Buried in FERME-OLIVIER CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot 3. Row G. Grave 22.

Captain, 9th Battalion attached 2nd Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment). Killed in action 1 July 1916. Aged 23. Son of the Rev. Herbert Seddon Rowley, M.A., and Mrs. F. L. Rowley, of Wretham Rectory, Thetford. Norfolk. In the 1901 census he was aged 8, born Mildenhall, Suffolk, son of Herbert Geddon abd Fanny Louisa Rowley, resident Rectory, Village, East Wretham, Thetford, Norfolk. In the 1911 census he was aged 18, born Mildenhall, Suffolk, a Bank clerk, boarding at 32, Breakspears Road, Brockley S.E., St Paul, Deptford, London & Kent. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 11 D.
