CRATFIELD WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The War Memorials are situated in the parish church and take the form of two wooden oak plaques, one for each war. There are eleven names listed for World War 1, this cost £10 raised by public subscription and was unveiled 27th November 1919, the plaque was created by Messrs. R Sillett & Son. There are three names listed on the World War 2 plaque that was unveiled 5th November 1952.

1914-1918

BRYENTON

Frederick Henry

Private 15693, 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 30/09/1915. Age 25. Son of Mr and Mrs Michael Bryenton of Vine Cottages, Cratfield. Buried at New Irish Farm Cemetery

CLARKE

Ernest W L

Sergeant 42988, 41st Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died 07/10/1918. Age 30. Husband of Ethel Clarke of Belle Vue, Cratfield. Buried at Aeroplane Cemetery

GIRLING

Arthur William

Stoker 1st Class K/20034, Royal Navy. HMS Natal. Died 30/12/1915. Age 20. Son of George and Ann Girling of Near School, Cratfield. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. The armoured cruiser HMS Natal was a unit of the 2nd Cruiser squadron.   On December 30th 1915, she was lying in Cromarty harbour when a fire broke out on board.  Within a short time her magazine exploded and she sank almost immediately.  Of her complement of 815 men, 421 were lost

Private 43074, 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 10/04/1917. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial

Private 22360, 11th Battalion, King’s Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). Died 26/11/1917. Born Huntingfield. Commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval

PRESTON

George William

Leading Seaman J/3993, Royal Navy. HMS Vanguard. Died 09/07/1917. Age 24. Son of Arthur George Preston of Silverleys Green, Cratfield. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. The battleship HMS Vanguard served with the Grand Fleet during WWI until the time of her destruction.  On July 9th 1917, whilst at anchor in Scapa Flow, she blew up, killing all but three of her complement of 670.  No cause of the explosion was ascertained

RAYNOR

Horace

Private 2805, 1st Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Died 09/05/1915. Buried at Bethune Town Cemetery. There is some suggestion that this could, actually be Horace Raymer of 7th Battalion Suffolk Regiment and the entry is incorrect on the memorial.

SHARMAN

Harold

Private 43310, 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 18/06/1917. Age 23. Son of George Sharman of Ivy House, Cratfield and the late Harriet Sharman. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial

STOKES

Frederick William

Leading Seaman J/5765, Royal Navy. HMS Indefatigable. Died 31/05/1916. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. The battlecruiser HMS Indefatigable was part of the Grand Fleet that engaged the Germa Navy in the Battle of Jutland. She was sunk in an exchange of gunfire with the German vessel SMS Von der Tann

Believed to be Private 50223, 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 21/02/1917. Buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen

Believed to be Private 3/9733, 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 12/10/1917. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial

1939-1945

MOBBS

Richard Sidney

Sergeant (Air Gunner) 1874047, 15 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 13/06/1944. Age 20. Son of Percy Alan and Mabel Ida Mobbs of Cratfield. Buried at Jonkerbos War Cemetery. Re-equipped with Lancaster bombers in 1943, 15 Squadron remained part of No 1 Group's main bomber force for the remainder of the war

SYMONDS

John

Sergeant (Air Gunner) 1883370, 576 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 17/03/1945. Buried at Durnbach War Cemetery. 576 Squadron was formed on 25 November 1943 from C Flight of 103 Squadron at Elsham Wolds. It began bombing operations with Lancasters on 2 December and continued this role until the end of the war, as part of the main force of Bomber Command

MM. Sergeant 5831604, 2/5th Battalion, The Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey). Died 19/09/1943. Age 23. Son of Mr and Mrs S Warren of Cratfield. Commemorated on the Cassino Memorial
