There
are two marble plaques within the parish church commemorating men from
World War 1 and World War 2 who gave their lives. There are 27 names
for World War 1 and 10 for World War 2. The initial memorial was dedicated
by Rev. Canon C D Lawrence and unveiled by Major General Sir Ronald
Lane on 8th May 1921. This was reported in the East Anglian Daily Times
10th May 1921.

1915, the fishing vessel Vanilla, was operating approximately 53
miles E by S from the Inner Dowsing Light Vessel, when, without
warning, she was hit by a torpedo fired from a U-Boat. She sank

Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. HMS President III
was a naval establishment located at Dedworth Manor. This establishment
was responsible for the pay, accounts and administration of the
D.E.M.S. (Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships) personnel, worldwide,
and was directly responsible to D.N.A. (The Director of Navy Accounts)
at Admiralty. Many of the Naval gunners assigned to the Defensively
Equipped Merchant Ships were posted to HMS President III. On 27th
August 1941, the German U-Boat U-557 sank three ships in a convoy,
ss Tremoda, ss Sauger and ss Embassage, each ship’s losses included
gunners |
