George Ernest Percy

Gunner RMA/7532, Royal Marine Artillery, HMS Lion. Died 31/05/1916. Age 36. Son of George and Rosetta Backhouse of London. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

The Battlecruiser HMS Lion was the flagship of Vice-Admiral Beatty. On 31st May 1916, she took part in the battle of Jutland. She received heavy damage from 23 x 12 inch and 1 x 5.9 inch shells which resulted in the loss of 99 of her 907 crew, with a further 51 badly injured

Lance Corporal Clarke's death is recorded on the Isle of Wight. Technically, Lance Corporal Clarke was the Suffolk Regiment's first casualty of the Great War (and the 83rd army casualty of the war), however, the Suffolk Regiment did not go into action until 26th August 1914 and Lance Corporal Clarke died at home, so it is likely that he died either as a result of illness or possibly a training injury

According to the Commonwealth War Graves register, Corporal Clow's date of death is 01/10/1919, this is a typing error. The 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment lost 8 men on 1st October 1918 in this sector, all are buried at Rumilly-En-Cambresis, including Corporal Clow. General Records Office data supports the 1918 date of death

Ernest Leslie

Leading Stoker P/KX 114350, Royal Navy, HMS Fidelity. Died 01/01/1943. Age 22. Son of George William and Florence Marian Hudson of Shottisham. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

HMS Fidelity was a former French ship (Le Rhin) commandered by the Royal Navy in 1940. It was classified as a "Disguised Convoy Ship" or Special Services Vessel, armed with four 4-inch guns, four torpedo tubes, two seaplanes and a motor torpedo boat. On 29th December 1942 she was heading from the UK to Colombo as part of Convoy ONS-154, reputedly transporting Royal Marine Commandos to Indo-China for a guerrilla action behind Japanese lines. She was hit by a torpedo fired by U-615, which caused some damage. The following day she was hit by another torpedo fired by U-435 near the Azores, as a result of this attack she sank with the loss of 325 of the 335 persons on board. Official records show the date of death of these persons as 01/01/1943; this may be based on German records that show originally a large number of survivors in the water on 30th December and again on 31st December.
