Private 16808 1st Battalion Suffolk Regiment. Died 20 September 1915 France/Flanders. Born 1878 Stutton, son of Elias and Eliza Amos. In 1901 census living in Stutton and was a horseman on farm. Enlisted Ipswich. Buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

BULLARD

Ivy Osbourne

Private PO7238 Royal Marine Light Infantry. Served on HMS Russell. Died 27 April 1916 during the Battle of Jutland. In 1901 was a Private in Marine Light Infantry. Born 13 June 1874 son of George and Sarah Bullard of Tattingstone; husband of Mrs Mary Jane Bullard (nee Bishop) of Devizes Wiltshire, he left four children. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

HMS Russell was a Battleship of the Duncan Class. HMS Russell was mined off the coast of Malta on 27 April 1916 with the loss of over 100 lives.

CHISNALL

William

Private 11062 5th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment. Killed in action 13 October 1915 France. Born 1889 Tattingstone, son of Alfred and Sarah Chisnall. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Loos-en-Gohelle, Pas de Calais, France and on the Tattingstone war memorial.

DALE

Arthur

Sergeant 2840, 20th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. Died (lost at Sea) 21 February 1917. Born 1889 Tattingstone, son of Ephraim and Eliza Dale. Commemorated on the Mikra Memorial, Greece and on the Tattingstone war memorial.

Brothers Arthur and Robert Dale enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery on the same day. Robert Dale was due to come back to the UK on leave but waited a few days for his brother, Arthur who was also due for leave, so they could travel together. They were on the SS Princess Alberta which was attacked and torpedoed by enemy seaplanes in the Mediterranean on 21 February 1917 and both were drowned.

ELLIOT

Charles A B

Second Lieutenant 1st Bn Somerset Light Infantry. Died 12 April 1917 France. Born 1893 London, son of Charles and Catherine Elliot (Charles Elliott was Rector of Tattingstone). He had also served with the 4th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment in Gallipoli in 1915 and in Egypt in 1916. Buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, Pas de Calais, France and commemorated on the Tattingstone war memorial.

Private 20813 5th Bn Kings Shropshire Lt Infantry. Killed in action 18 March 1917, France/Flanders. Born 1880 Tattingstone son of Daniel and Emily Gull; husband of Sarah Ann Gull of Tattingstone. EADT 4 April 1917 - Deaths Whilst on Service: fallen in action, Harry Gull on 18 March, husband of S A Gull and only son of D Gull of Tattingstone. Commemorated on the Arras memorial, France and on the Tattingstone war memorial.

HARRISON

William John

Private 13073 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment. Died of wounds 23 April 1915 France/Flanders Born 1895 Strumpshaw, Norfolk, son of William Harrison who (in 1901) was sub-postmaster, grocer and pork butcher at Strumpshaw. Enlisted Ipswich. Buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery, Nord, France and commemorated on the Tattingstone war memorial.

KERRISON

Roger Orme

Lieutenant Colonel 6th Secondary Regiment Australian Field Artillery attached to the 4th Brigade (formerly of the Suffolk Yeomanry and Reserve Cavalry Regiment). He joined the Loyal Suffolk Hussars (Yeomanry) in 1896 and subsequently commanded the Regiment. Died 18 September 1917 France. He was born in 1873 at Old Lakenham, Norfolk son of Roger and Florence Kerrison; in 1881 his family was living at 17 Tower House, St Mary at Tower, Ipswich and his father was a banker. Subsequently the family lived at Tattingstone Place. EADT 21 September 1917 - Deaths Whilst on Service: Lt Col Roger Orme Kerrison, died in hospital of dysentery contracted on active service in France. EADT of the same date has obituary which states that his mother was a daughter of the Rev Sir Charles Clark, Bart and that Lt Col Kerrison was born at Old Lakenham, Norfolk. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge and was a JP for Suffolk. Buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France and commemorated on the Tattingstone war memorial.

Sergeant 6200 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action, 14 January 1915 France/ Flanders,. Born 1880 Aldham Suffolk, son of Henry and Maryann Leeks; husband of Mrs S E Leeks. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Eiper and on Tattingstone war memorial.

Corporal 32176 9th Battalion Tank Corp. Died 25 September 1918 France. Born 1891, son of John Henry and Grace Patterson; husband of Mrs Ada Patterson of Victoria Street, Kibworth Harcourt, Leicester. Buried in Bellicourt Military Cemetery and commemorated on the Tattingstone war memorial.

Private G/10347 1st Battalion East Kent Regiment (The Buffs). Killed in action 15 April 1917 France. Born 1879 Rushmere, son of William and Elizabeth Spurling. EADT 14 May 1917 - Deaths Whilst on Service: Alfred Spurling, husband of Rebecca, eldest son of William Spurling of Birch Wood, Tattingstone, age 36, he left a wife and child to mourn his loss. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Loos-en-Gohelle, Pas de Calais, France and on the Tattingstone war memorial.

Able Seaman C/JX150776. Died 12 December 1942 age 27 on HM Submarine Traveller. Son of William Edgar and Bella Marion Rush of Rushmere, Ipswich. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

HM Submarine Traveller was on a reconnaissance patrol off the coast of Taranto as part of Operation Portcullis (an attack on Italian warships in Taranto Harbour) and was probably mined on or about 4 December 1942.
