TRIMLEY ST MARTIN WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 & NI - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is to be found within the churchyard of St Martin's Church, High Road, Trimley St Martin. It takes the form of a Clipsham stone Latin cross on a two stepped, octagonal base; the inscriptions are on bronze plaques; the memorial is weathered. There are 26 names for Wolrd War 1, 7 names fo World War 2 and one for Northern Ireland. The original memorial was unveiled on 3rd April 1921 by Major-General Sir Arthur Money; the builders were Messars Clary & Wright, the architect Mr William Henry Ward; details can be found in the East Anglian Daily Times 5th April 1921.

Robert Bernard

Stoker 1st Class K/9118, Royal Navy. HMS Princess Irene. Died 27/05/1915. Age 22. Son of Stephen and Emma Gorham of 2 Delun Villas, Mill Lane, Trimley. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

The auxiliary minelayer HMS Princess Irene had originally been a 1,500 passenger Canadian Pacific liner. After several trips in her new capacity as a minelayer, she was in Sheerness docks for a refit, when on the morning of 27th May 1915, a huge explosion tore through the vessel. When the smoke had cleared there was no sign of anything resembling a ship. 278 people died, including a number of dockyard workers and a number of civilians from the town of sheerness who were hit by debris. An investigation concluded that the mine charges on board the ship were unstable and one had detonated causing a chain reaction

Civilian, Royal Naval Air Station, Felixstowe. Died of wounds sustained by enemy Gotha air attack 14/07/1917. Aged 46. Husband of Margaret Newman of Trimley; father of Howard (above) who also died during World War 1. Buried in Trimley Churchyard. Grave inscription reads:

JOHN CHARLES NEWMAN who was killed at the RNAS Felixstowe by enemy aircraft July 14th 1917 age 46 years, and also of HOWARD CHARLES his eldest son who died of wounds received in action in France April 15th 1918 age 21 years.

The destroyer HMS Eclipse hit a mine and sank on 24th October 1942 off Kalimno in the Dodecanese

Northern Ireland

CLAVEY

Mark [Robert]

Signalman 24554739, Royal Corps of Signals. Aged 24. One of six soldiers killed by an IRA bomb as they prepared to return to barracks after a charity fun run in Lisburn, Antrim 15th June 1988. The soldiers were using a civilian minlbus which was booby-trapped by the IRA with a large semtex device. The explosive had been moulded into a cone shape to maximise the killing power. Born 5 January 1964. Son of Marion and John Clavey. Buried in St Martin's Churchyard, Trimley St Martin. Ipswich.
