The
auxiliary minelayer HMS Princess Irene had originally been a 1,500
passenger Canadian Pacific liner. After several trips in her new
capacity as a minelayer, she was in Sheerness docks for a refit,
when on the morning of 27th May 1915, a huge explosion tore through
the vessel. When the smoke had cleared there was no sign of anything
resembling a ship. 278 people died, including a number of dockyard
workers and a number of civilians from the town of sheerness who
were hit by debris. An investigation concluded that the mine charges
on board the ship were unstable and one had detonated causing a
chain reaction |

by an IRA bomb as they prepared to return to barracks after a charity
fun run in Lisburn, Antrim 15th June 1988. The soldiers were using
a civilian minlbus which was booby-trapped by the IRA with a large
semtex device. The explosive had been moulded into a cone shape
to maximise the killing power. Born 5 January 1964. Son of Marion
and John Clavey. Buried in St Martin's Churchyard, Trimley St Martin.
