WETHERINGSETT CUM BROCKFORD WAR MEMORIAL

There are two memorials for Wetheringsett. The first is a Cornish granite obelisk standing on a stepped base at the southern entrance to the village; the memorial contains the names of 20 men for World War 1 and 6 for World War 2. This memorial was unveiled by J B Chevallier 24 July 1921 at 3:30pm, the builders were Messrs. Frewer & Moss; details appeared in the East Anglian Daily Times 27 July 1921. The second memorial takes the form of two joined plaques of white marble within All Saints Parish Church. This memorial contains one more name than the obelisk and lists 21 names for World War 1 and 6 for World War 2. This memorial cost £100 by public subscription and was unveiled by Brigadier-General Brooke-Popham 15 August 1920; the builders were Messrs. Frewer & Moss; details appeared in the East Anglian Daily Times 17 August 1920.

BEDWELL	Albert Victor	[Listed as Arthur Victor Bedwell on SDGW] Private G/44088 (CWGC) or G/44008 (SDGW), 17th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment). Killed in action 13 November 1916. Aged 21. Born Little Glinham, enlisted Bury St Edmunds, resident Stowmarket. Army. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier and Face 12 D and 13 B. Albert Victor Bedwell’s father Alfred Joseph Bedwell and George Bedwell’s father George were brothers so Albert and George were first cousins.

SMITH	Albert George	Died date unknown. No further military information currently available. GRO Birth Registration Albert George SMITH Sep 1896 Hartismere. Son of James and Laura (nee MILLS) SMITH. Resident in the 1901 Census at Pages Green, Wetheringsett, Suffolk. Albert and Spencer Smith were brothers. Listed in 1911 census as an Agricultural Labourer, aged 14, born Wetheringsett, living in Wetheringsett. There are many entries in the Commonwealth War Grave listings for A G Smiths and it was not possible to identify one for Albert Smith of Wetheringsett.

COLE	Harold Arthur Peter	Assistant Cook (O) P/MX 62149, HMS Illustrious, Royal Navy. Died of wounds 11 January 1941 when HMS Illustrious was heavily damaged by a concerted enemy air attack by German dive-bombers on 10 January 1941, when the armoured flight deck armour was penetrated by an 1100lb (500kg) bomb. NUNN	John Henry	Sergeant (Wireless Operator/Air Gunner) 1202182, 100 Squadron (flying Avro Lancaster III's from Waltham in operations over Germany), No.1 Group, RAF Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
