The memorials are within St. Mary The Virgin Parish Church, Burpham. There are memorials to both wars along with a memorial window to an airman who died in 1928. There is an illuminated list of 9 names for 1914-1918 with a panel added for 1939-1945 bearing 4 names with one name added for 1921 below.

Lieutenant, 1/4th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 53rd Division. Killed in action during the First Battle of Gaza in Palestine 26 March 1917. Aged 22. Son of The Rev. Professor & Mrs Tyrrell Green of Burpham Croft, Burpham. Later of Lampeter Wales. Included on the Welsh National War Memorial in Cathay’s Park, Cardiff. Commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial.

Brother of Charles Colville (below). BA (Oxon) Christchurch College. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). Commemorated on The Singapore Memorial

Second Lieutenant, 5th Cinque Ports Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Killed in action at El Alamein 27 October 1942. Aged 20. Son of Major John Wilberforce Hare & Irene Victoria Hare of Burpham. Brother of John Edward (above). Buried in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.

HAYLER

Edwin John

Sergeant /Air Gunner RAFVR 75 Bomber Squadron (Lancasters) operating from Mepal, Cambridgeshire. Lost on operations over France 8 August 1944. Aged 19. Son of Frank & Alice Rose Hayler of Burpham (See more details on cards below memorial provided by relatives). Buried in St Valery-en-Caux Franco-British Cemetery.

Sergeant RAFVR 156 Bomber Squadron (Lancasters) .Based at Warboys. Lost on operations over Europe 3 January 1944. Aged 23. Son of Frederick Edwin and Ellen Mary Woolven of Burpham. Husband of Joan Marie Woolven of Littlehampton. Commemorated on The Runnymede Memorial
