ACASTER SELBY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Detailed information

The memorial is to be found in the churchyard of St John's church, Acaster Selby. It takes the form of a stone cross surmounting a tapering stone plinth which bears the single name and inscription in carved lettering, the whole stands on a two-stepped base. The memorial was unveile don 6th November 1921, the builders were George W Milburn and Son.

Private 64302, 7th Bn., Royal Fusiliers. Died of wounds 14th October 1918. Aged 21. Son of James and Emma Gavigan, of Acaster Selby. Buried in Acaster Selby (or Low Acaster) (St. John) Churchyard. The inscription on Fred Gavigan’s grave is as follows:

In Loving Memory of Pte. Fred Gavigan 7th Royal Fusiliers. Dearly beloved son of James & Mary E Gavigan who died from wounds 14th October 1918 aged 21 years
Greater love hath no man than this than to lay down his life for his friends.

O LAMB OF GOD, ALL PITYING BLEST, GRANT
UNTO THEM THINE ETERNAL REST
