APPLETON ROEBUCK WAR MEMORIAL

Appleton Roebuck is a village and civil parish in the Selby district of North Yorkshire. The village is about nine miles south-west from York. The memorial is situated in the churchyard of All Saints’ Church, Main Street, Appleton Roebuck. It takes the form of a Portland stone, Celtic style, cross mounted on a tapering shaft standing on a plinth with a single step. The memorial was sculpted by John Henry Plows. There are three names for World War 1 and 3 for World War 2.

Joseph

Lance Serjeant 1796, 18th (Queen Mary's Own) Hussars. Died of wounds 25th May 1915. Joseph Barnes was born and lived in Bolton Percy, he enlisted in York. Buried Klein-Vierstraat British Cemetery, Belgium, V. E. 10.

CUNDALL

Henry Yates

Corporal 300885, 16th Mountain Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died 31st October 1918. Aged 28. Son of Joseph and Mary H. Cundall of Tadcaster, Yorkshire. Buried Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel, EE. 21.

LORRIMAN

Harry

Private 20398, 8th Bn., King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Killed in action 1st July 1916. Harry Lorriman was born in Askham Bryan and enlisted in York. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France, Pier and Face 11 C and 12 A.

DUNNINGTON

William C H

Gunner 1800378, 49 Battery, 48 Lt. A.A. Regt., Royal Artillery. Died 20th June 1944. Aged 22. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Henry Dunnington, of Layerthorpe, York. Commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, Column 17.

HORNER

John Richard

Private 4543444, 1st Bn., West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own). Died 12th June 1944. Son of John and Elizabeth Horner; husband of Mabel Horner, of Colton, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial, Burma, Face 8. The inscription on the memorial indicates service with the 5th Battalion, West Yorks.

WATKINS

John Patrick

Corporal 1697042, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 1st September 1946. Aged 33. Son of John Edward and Emily Watkins; husband of Isabella Catherine Watkins, of Askham Richard, Yorkshire. Buried Munster Heath War Cemetery, Germany, 4. E. 23. The inscription on the memorial indicates he served with the RAF Regiment.
