ARKENGARTHDALE WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is sited off the road in a walled area with iron rails across the entrance. There is a decorative cross on a long shaft mounted on a plinth and two stepped base. There are 5 names on two panels affixed to the plinth all for World War 1.

Private D/14471, 3rd Draggon Guards (Prince of Wales's Own). Killed in action 4th April 1918. Born and enlisted Arkengarthdale. Son of Mrs. M. H. Harker, of Hillside, Arkengarthdale, Richmond, Yorks. Buried in ADELAIDE CEMETERY, VILLERS-BRETONNEUX, Somme, France. Plot II. Row A. Grave 3.

Private 19546,6th Battalion, Alexandra, princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment). Killed in action 14th September 1916. Aged 23. Born Harkengarth Dale (sic -SDGW), enlisted Durham, resident Eshwinning, Durham. Brother of Mr W. Coats of Browntion Low Road, Richmond Yorks. Buried in LONSDALE CEMETERY, AUTHUILE, Somme, France. Plot IX. Row F. Grave 7.

LONGSTAFF

Thomas [Henry]

Acting Lance Corporal P/5214, Mounted Branch, Corps of Military Police. Died in United Kingdom 15th April 1919. Aged 31. Born and enlisted Arkengarthdale, resident York. Son of John and Mary Jane Longstaff, of Raw Bank, Reeth, Richmond, Yorks. Formerly 2068, Cavalry of the Line. Buried west of the Church tower in ST. MARY CHURCHYARD, ARKENGARTHDALE, West Yorkshire.

[Listed as John Alderson on CWGC] Gunner 157720, 287th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Killed in action 16th August 1917. Aged 29. Born Arkengarthdale, enlisted Ferry Hill, Durham. Son of the late James Scott; husband of Mather Scott, of Arkletown, Arkengarthdale, Richmond, Yorks. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 6 to 7 and 162.
