The
memorial is incorporated within a stone clock tower, built of York stone.
There are two dedicatory stone tablets that have been placed on the
tower which list the names of the fallenl the whole is surrounded by
a metal railing and planted flower beds. There are 25 names listed for
World War 1 and 19 dir World War 2. The site was donated by Mr Robert
Gill; the memorial cost £360, the clock £35, and incidentals
£9, a total cost of £404 0s 0d. The architects designed
the memorial for no fee. The memorial was originally unveiled 11 November
1921. In 2000 the memorial was cleaned and repointed, new wrought iron
railings installed and the area landscaped, costing £2987; the
memorialm was then rededicated in 2000. In 2010 the clock mechanism
was cleaned and refurbished by Smith's of Derby and the railings repainted
at a cost of £750. References to the memorial appeared in the
Whitby Gazette 18 November 1921 and 9 June 2000.

Note:
The S.S. Treverbyn was launched 9 February 1910, built by John Readhead
& Sons Ltd at West Yard, South Shields. On 3 September 1917
she was mined and sunk 2 miles E.S.E. of Ushinish Light, South Uist
while on a voyage from Narvik to Manchester with a cargo of iron
ore; the mine had been laid by U-Boat U75 on 12 August 1917.
