LEEDS,
STOURTON AND THWAITEGATE WAR MEMORIAL
World
War 1 & 2 - Detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Martin Edwards 2007
The
memorial stands at the junction of Wakefield Road, Pontefract Road and
Thwaitegate, Stourton. It was moved about 1973 from St Andrew's Church,
Pontefract Road, when the church was closed and eventually demolished
to make way for redevelopment in the area. The new site was donated
by John Waddington Printers who paid for its removal and re-erection
also. The memorial takes the form of a plinth surmounted by a shaft
and cross with inscriptions on the sides of the plinth; the memorial
is on a raised area set away from the road with steps leading to it.
The names listed here have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease
of reading and research.

A
STOKER'S THEM PREMONITION.
Among
the members of the crew of the Hampshire was Stoker Harold Hayes,
son Mrs. Hayes, of Ida-grove, Stourton. He had been in the Navy
only eighteen months, and before the war was employed at Woodlesford
Colliery. Curiously enough, when home on leave recently, he told
his mother he had dreamt that he had seen the Hampshire blown
up, and that he would rather be on any other vessel.
Two
other Leeds victims of the Hampshire disaster are First-class
Stoker Fred Nowland, of Littletown-terrace, Holbeck, who joined
the Navy in October last, and First-class Stoker Albert Smith,
a son of Mrs. W. Smith, of Winford-street. New Wortley. The latter
was on a small vessel sunk in October last, but he escaped uninjured.
Before joining the Navy he was head lampboy at the Great Northern
Railway Station at Leeds. His three brothers are in the Navy.
Extract
from Skyrack Courier - Friday 16 June 1916, page 3:
A
STOURTON STOKER'S DREAM.
WENT DOWN WITH THE "HAMPSHIRE"
FORMERLY EMPLOYED AT WOODLESFORD COLLIERY.
When home on leave recently for the first and, as events have
proved, the last time, a Stourton stoker had a dream in which
he saw, his ship—the ill-fated Hampshire—blown up
and sunk. He has now gone down with his ship under circumstances
curiously similar to those he related at his home at the time.
As
a resuh of the dream he was much upset, and when he was about
to return to the Hampshire said he would rather be going to any
British ship than his own. In the light of events, his premonition
as to the vessel being blown up and his reluctance to rejoin it
were remarkable. A Leeds "Evening News" reporter obtained
confirmation of the story from his mother—Mrs Hayes. of
30, Ida Grove, Stourton—who said her son (Stoker Harold
Hayes) had only joined the Hampshire during the war.
Hearing
nothing from him after the Jutland action and the Hampshire disaster,
she had grave fears of his fate. On Thursday morning she received
a letter from him and hoped to find that he was safe, but, unfortunately,
his message only intimated that he had figured in the North Sea
fight without hurt.
Hayes
expressed the opinion that the British had won, despite reports,
and that the Germans had lost more ships than they had admitted.
His mother continued to hope for news of him until Monday morning,
when she got an official intimation that he must be counted lost
in the Kitchener disaster.
In
the meantime she had recalled her son's dream. "It is remarkable
that when last on leave," She said, "he came down one
morning quite depressed, and said: "Mother, I don't feel
like going back on the Hampshire.'"
"I
asked him why," said Mrs Hayes, "and he said: 'I have
had a dream in which I saw the Hampshire blown up.' Later he said
he would rather be on any other vessel.
Stoker
Hayes had been in the Navy 18 months, having previously served
on a destroyer. Before the war he was employed at Woodlesford
Colliery.
He
was well-known in football circles Stourton way, and had taken
part in naval matches.
