SOWERBY CRIMEAN WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is located in the North aisle of St Peters Church, Sowerby. It takes the form of a white marble tablet with cornice mounted on to a triangular headed, grey slate, backboard with the inscription in black lettering adorned with cannon and cannonballs, draped flag and sheathed sword carved in relief at the top. There are ten names listed. Although the names are listed by unitm they have been sorted here into alphabetical order for ease of research and reading.

The first service in the present church was held on the 3rd January 1763, this being the 3rd church on the site.
Crimean Soldiers' Memorial
Several Sowerby young men fought for their country in the Crimean War, and ten of these laid down their lives. A suitable marble tablet to their memory was erected in the Church by subscription on the 7th September 1855, at a cost of £24.
