SPROATLEY WAR MEMORIAL

The Sproatley village memorial is to be found at the crossroads in the centre of the village on the B1238. It takes the form of a small, ornamental, wheel style cross on a flat top column which stands on a square plinth on a three stepped base all made from black granite, the whole being surrounded by metal railings. For World War 1 there are 61 names in total, 48 who served and returned and 13 names listed who ; there none for World War 2. The memorial cost £130 to erect; the sculptor was Mr Albert Leake. It was unveiled 5 June 1920 attended by Mrs Chichester-Constable. The names have been transcribed as they are listed and not sorted into any order.

Private 202508. 4th Battalion, Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), formerly 1873 Yorkshire Regiment. Died home 24th June 1917, aged 18 years. Son of J and F M Atkinson of Sproatley, Yorkshire. Born Sproatley, enlisted Beverley and resident Hull, Yorkshire. Commemorated Sproatley (St Swithin) Churchyard.
COATES George Bernard
Private 148. A Company, 5th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Emigrated to Australia c1912, embarked from Australia 21st October 1914 and died between 9th and 10th August 1915, aged 24 years. Son of George and Eleanor Coates of 14 Windsor Terrace, Hexham, Nbl. Born Wyton, Yorkshire, attended Sproatley Endowed School, Sproatley, Yorkshire. Commemorated Lone Pine Memorial. 24.
FAIRBANK Ernest
Private 30720. 1st Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 46490 Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action 28th May 1918, aged 33 years. Baptised 9 May 1886 in Sproatley. son of James and Mary Ann Sproatley. Son of James and Mary Fairbank of Winter Hill, Sproatley, Yorkshire. Husband of Emily Dann (formerly Fairbank, nee Prest) of Winter Hill, Sproatley, Yorkshire, and also of 53 Errol Road, Hove, Sussex, married 6 May 1917 in St John's, Middlesbrough. Born Sproatley, enlisted Barnsley and resident Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 25, born Sproatley, Yorkshire, a Farmer's Son working on farm, son of James and Mary Ann Fairbank, resident Sproatley Hull, Wyton Sproatley, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (East Riding). His Army Service record shows he was born in Sproatley and resident in Middlesborough when he enlisted 1915. Attested 9 December 1915 at West Hartlepool, aged 29 years 8 months, Meat Salesman by trade, religious denomination Church of England, height 5 feet 7½ inches, weight 126lbs, chest 36 inches, to Army Reserve 10 December 1915, mobilised 12 July 1917, posted 13 July 1917. Embarked and posted to 6th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment 1 April 1918, Arrived 'F' Depot 2 April 1918, transferred to East Yorkshire Regiment and posted to 1st battalion, assigned new regimental number 30730, 3 April 1918. Commemorated Soissons Memorial, France.

Gunner 2392. 1st (East Riding) Battery, 2nd (Northumbrian) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 14th February 1916, aged 25 years. Husband of Ethel M Fox. Commemorated Railway Dugouts Burial Ground. III.A.7.
HODGSON John Edward
Sapper 40366. 62nd Field Company, Royal Engineers. Killed in action 18th September 1917. Born Marton and enlisted Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. Commemorated Messines Ridge British Cemetery. I.B.36.
HORNER H C
Sproatley gravestone has mention of Sergeant Henry Cecil Horner, 325th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Died 23rd January 1919, aged 36 years. Fourth son of Henry S and Mary E Horner of Sproatley, Yorkshire. Born Sproatley, and present Sproatley 1901 census. No trace CWGC or Australian War Memorial/Nominal Roll records. Commemorated Sproatley Memorial and churchyard headstone, other commemoration unknown.

Rifleman C/12759. 21st Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Killed in action 7th October 1916. Born and enlisted Hull, Yorkshire. Commemorated Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 13A and 13B.
JACKSON F
Possibly Frederick Jackson. Lance Corporal 101627. 10th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action 3rd May 1917, aged 33 years. Son of Walter and Frances M Jackson of 1 Belgrave Mansions, Marine Drive, Bridlington, Yorkshire. Born and enlisted Hull, Yorkshire. Commemorated Arras Memorial. Bay 4 and 5.
LAVERACK John Thomas
Private 39876. 22nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Killed in action 26th March 1918. Born Bilton, enlisted Hull and resident Sproatley Rise, Yorkshire. Commemorated Ham British Cemetery. Croix-Molignaux German Cemetery Mem 19.

Possibly Thomas Boden Laycock. Rifleman 2185. 2nd Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Died of wounds 1st November 1914. Born Hull Holy Trinity and enlisted Hull, Yorkshire. Commemorated Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Panel 51 and 53.
PECKITT George Robert
Private 52619. 22nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, formerly 24634 East Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action 4th March 1917, aged 19 years. Son of Robert and Rose Peckitt of New Lodge, Sproatley, Yorkshire. Born Patrington, enlisted Hull and resident Sproatley, Yorkshire. Commemorated Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 14A and 15C.

Private 8789. 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards. Died of wounds 24th December 1914, aged 24 years. Son of Robert H and Rosa R Riley. Husband of Edith Mary Dann (formerly Riley) of 2089, 48th Avenue West, Vancouver, Canada. Born Swine (as SDGW) or Sproatley (as 1901 census) and enlisted Hull, Yorkshire, resident Windsor, Brk. Commemorated Le Touret Memorial. Panel 2 and 3.

Possibly John Herbert Wharram, born 1892 Langtoft, Yorkshire, the son of William Henry and Alice Wharram and present West Newton with Burton Constable in 1911 census, but unable to identify as casualty and no further information.
