UPLEATHAM WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is located in Upleatham, Cleveland. It takes the form of a marble column with a two-stepped stone base. The column tapers at the top an on it is mounted an urn. The column bears the names of 23 men from World War 1, the top three having given their lives, the other 20 served, and 1 from World War 2.

Acting Corporal 17/945, 17th Battalion (N.E.R. Pioneers), Northumberland Fusiliers. Killed in action 12th November 1917. Aged 29. Born Marske, enlisted York. Son of W. H. and Annie Seaton, of Tocketts Mill, Guisborough, Yorks. Buried in BARD COTTAGE CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot VI. Row B. Grave 34.

Private 5715, 1st/6th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Died of wounds 7th November 1916. Born Whittingham, NJorthumberland, enlisted Marske-By-Sea, resident Upleatham. Formerly 28750, Yorkshire Regiment. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 14 A and 15 C.

Sapper WR/24397, 332nd Tunnelling Company [SDGW states 322nd Railway Construction Company], Royal Engineers. Died 18th October 1918. Born Upleatham, enlisted Marske-By-Sea. Buried in BEAUREVOIR COMMUNAL CEMETERY BRITISH EXTENSION, Aisne, France. Plot/Row/Section D. Grave 1.
