WITHERNWICK WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Paul Boyle 2015

The memorial is to be found in Withernwick opposite the village hall in the centre of the village. It takes the form of a small Latin cross on a tapering, octagonal, shaft atop a square granite plinth with a three stepped base. The plinth carries the World War 1 inscription and names. A secondary stone tablet has been placed on the steps at the front of the memorial commemorating the men who gaves their lives in World War 2. There are ten names for World War 1 and four for World War 2. The memorial was originally unveiled 7 October 1922 by Colonel George Easton C.B.E., T.D., D.L. The names from the memorial have been sorted into alphabetical order here for ease of reading and research but are listed in chronological order on the memorial. Within St Alban's Church, Withernwick, is a furthermemorial to the World War 1 parishioners that fell in World War 1; this takes the form of a nowy headed brass plaque with an incised inscription, mounted on marble backboard with an incised depiction of a cross within a garlanded wreath at its top, centre. See also Withernwick Village web site, the memorial dedication photographs are to be found at www.withernwickvillage.co.uk/War-Mem-Dedication.htm
