YORK NORTH EASTERN RAIL COMPANY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information
Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwaards 2022

The memorial is to be found on Station Rise, York. The Memorial built from Portland Stone and the structure comprises an obelisk mounted between walls screening three sides of a podium bearing an altar-shaped Stone of Remembrance. The screen walls bear the names of 2236 men of the North Eastern Railway who lost their lives in the First World War. To the rear of the Stone of Remembrance are 15 slate panels bearing the names of 551 London and North Eastern Railway men from the former North Eastern Railway area who lost their lives in the Second World War. The original memorial was unveiled by Fierld Marshal Herbert Plumer 14 June 1924 and dedicated by Archbishop of York. The whole was rededicated in 1984. To the right of the masonry memorial, affixed to the abutment to the City Walls, are bronze plaques. These plaques list the names from the First World War and were erected in 2011 due the erosion of the names on the masonry memorial. They were unveiled and dedicated 11 November, 2011.
