mentioned in despatch of General Lord Kitchener of July 28th, 1901,
in the he, when "in command of some scouts shewed great skill
in extricating his men from a very difficult position," and
as A.D.C. to Colonel Grey frequently rendered most "plucky
and valuable service." |

(The King's Royal Irish) Hussars. Killed in action near Dalmanutha,
13th October, 1900. He was th eldest son of Griffith Jones, Esq.,
of The Bury, Goldington, near Bedford; was born March, 1875, and
educated at Rugby, where he passwed directly into Sandhurst. He
entered the 8th Hussars September 1895, being promoted lieutenant
November 1896 and was appointed adjutant of his regimeny March 1899.
He was selected for special service in Natal, under Lieutenant-General
Sir G White, but on arrival in November 1899, Ladysmith was already
invested, and he was then attached for duty to the Army Service
Corps with the Natal Field Force. He was present at the actions
at Chievely, Monte Christo, Pieters Hill, and the relief of Ladysmith.
Major-General Barton, C.B., to whom he acted a galloper, brought
his good services to notice on two occasions. On the arrival of
the 8th Hussars in South Africa, he rejoined his Regiment in April
1900, again taking up the duties of adjutant. He then took part
in the advance on Pretoria, and was present at every engagement
with his Regiment, including the Battle of Diamond Hill, where his
gallantry is stated to have been very conspicuous. He was mentioned
in despatches London Gazette, February 8th, 1901. He is buried at
Dalmanutha; a marble cross erected to his memory by his brother
officers marks his grave. |

(then Sir Herbert) Kithcener, 1898, with the 2nd Battalion of his
Regiment, and was present at the battle of Khartoum receiving the
British medal and the Khedive's medal and bar. He accompanied his

and Fanny Rabbit, resident Salph End, Renhold, Bedford, Bedfordshire.
In the 1891 census he is aged 18, born Renhold, Bedfordshire, an
Apprentice boarding Midland Road, Bedford Western Ward, Bedford,
Bedfordshire. In the 1901 censis his wife Lilian is shown as a widow,
born Bedfordshire, a Dressmaker, resident 15, Fore Street, Tiverton,

Reitz, 6th June 1901. Aged 25. He was the second son of Lieutenant-Colonel
C. J. Strong, Chairman of Peterborough Quarter Sessions. Born 9th
January 1875. Educated at Harrow. He entered the Bedfordshire Regiment
from the Royal Military Collgeg in March, 1895, and was promoted
Lieutenant in July 1897. He was gazetted to the Bedfordshire Regiment
on 6th March, 1895, and became lieutenant 10th July 1897. He was
mentioned in despatches, London Gazette, September 1901, also in
the despatch of General Lord Kitchener of 28th July 1901, for having
"when in command of a rear guard by his determined resistance
to a superior force, enabled the baggage to get across a bad drift
without a shot being fired at it," and for having "done
consistent good work on many oiccasions." Awarded the Distinguished
Service Order (D.S.O.) [London Gazette 27th September 1901]. Memorial
in Northampton Cathedral - "To the Glory of God and in memory
of Brave Men, inhabitants of this County and neighbourhood, who
gave their lives for their Sovereign and Country during the War
in South Africa 1899-1902, the Western Window of this Cathedral
was filled with stained glass, AD 1903........ The Bedfordshire
Regiment, Lieut. C.P. Strong, DSO.....". He was killed before
his decoration was gazetted, and the insignia, etc., were sent to
his father.

Force under Sir Robert Low in 1895, with the 1st Battalion of his
Regiment and received the medal and bar. He embarked with the 2nd
battalion of his Regiment for South Africa in December 1899, and
served with it until his death. |

day. Aged 25. Eldest son of Horace Wilmer, of Grove Hill, South
Woodford, Essex. Born August 1876. Educated at Wellington. While
aged thirteen he was awarded the Royal Humane Society certificate
for saving a drowning child at Woodford. He entered the Bedfordshire
Regiment, from the 4th Battalion, Essex Regiment, in December 1897,
being promoted lieutenant in January, 1899. He accompanied his battalion
to South Africa in December, 1899, and first served in the north
of Cape Colony, and was severely wounded. He was subsequently with
the Mounted Infantry of his battalion under Colonel De Lisle, until
wounded at Kafirstad. He thus served in the war for two years, and
was awarded the medal (QSA) and two bars. |
