Gordon Highlanders - Boer War Memorial in Intombi Cemetery, South Africa

Copyright © Martin Edwards 2004

The memorial to the Gordon Highlanders stands in Intombi Cemetery and lists those men from the Regiment who died of disease while stationed there during the Boer War 1899-1902. During the siege of Ladysmith food became very scarce and many of the 30,000 inhabitants died from enteric fever. In the final month of the siege, 28 British soldiers a day were being buried at the Intombi Hospital. Many other victims of the siege are buried on Cemetery Hill. To read more about the details of this particular situation please see The South African Military History Society - Military History Journal - Vol 5 No 6 - Intombi Military Hospital and Cemetery by S.A. Watt - See also Edinburgh Gordon Highlanders Boer War Memorial
