LEIGHTON BUZZARD CEDARS SCHOOL WAR MEMORIAL

This school was originally the Grammar School for Leighton Buzzard and was situated in a large Georgian House at the end of the High Street that is now Leighton Middle School. The War Memorial was erected in the grounds of the school and commemorates the students from the school who lost their lives in the Second World War.

ABBOTT

Stanley [John]

Stanley John Abbott was born on 14th September 1911. He was the son of a local coal merchant, Sidney Harry Abbott and his wife Maria Lavinia Abbott. He is recorded in the admissions register as being admitted to the school when it opened on 3rd May 1921 and his address is listed as 22, Mentmore Road, Linslade. He left the school on 22nd February 1929. He is listed in F. Fairbrother’s record of the school, The Cedars School, Leighton Buzzard The First Twenty-Five Years in the Roll of Honour as P/O S.J. Abbott. His date of death is recorded as 18th August 1945. He was working as a mail sorting clerk and telegraphist at Leighton Buzzard Post Office but he is not mentioned on the memorial in the Post Office. Richard William
Captain 330715, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment attached 9th Battalion, Border Regiment. Died on Monday 9th April 1945. Age 30. Son of William and Margaret Lucy Butler, of Leighton Buzzard. Buried in TAUKKYAN WAR CEMETERY, Myanmar. Grave 20. H. 18.

Peter Chris
Sergeant 580784, 99 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died on Wednesday 1st May 1940. Age 22. Son of Chris Angus Cunningham and Dorothy Gilmore Cunningham, of Northall. Buried in ST MARY CHURCHYARD, EDLESBOROUGH, Buckinghamshire.

John Edward Steadman
Corporal 619819, Royal Air Force. Died on Saturday 29th May 1943. Age 24. Son of Edward Henry Cooper Deverell, and of Dorothy Anne Deverell, of Tring, Hertfordshire. Buried in KIRKEE WAR CEMETERY, India. 2. F. 11.

Flight Lieutenant 78086, Navigator, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died on Friday 16th February 1945. Age 39. Son of Lawrence Boyd Faulkner and Annie Mabel Faulkner, of Linslade. Lance Sergeant 917317, 512 Battery, 148 (The Bedfordshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. Died on Tuesday 12th September 1944. Age 26. Son of Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Horne, of Linslade, Buckinghamshire. Commemorated on SINGAPORE MEMORIAL, Singapore. Column 36.
