        This 
          school was originally the Grammar School for Leighton Buzzard and was 
          situated in a large Georgian House at the end of the High Street that 
          is now Leighton Middle School. The War Memorial was erected in the grounds 
          of the school and commemorates the students from the school who lost 
          their lives in the Second World War.

                John Abbott was born on 14th September 1911. He was the son of 
                a local coal merchant, Sidney Harry Abbott and his wife Maria 
                Lavinia Abbott. He is recorded in the admissions register as being 
                admitted to the school when it opened on 3rd May 1921 and his 
                address is listed as 22, Mentmore Road, Linslade. He left the 
                school on 22nd February 1929. He is listed in F. Fairbrother’s 
                record of the school, The Cedars School, Leighton Buzzard 
                The First Twenty-Five Years in the Roll of Honour as P/O 
                S.J. Abbott. His date of death is recorded as 18th August 1945. 
                He was working as a mail sorting clerk and telegraphist at Leighton 
                Buzzard Post Office but he is not mentioned on the memorial in 
                the Post Office. [Details kindly supplied by
