The
War Memorial stands in Queensway, Bletchley. It takes the form of square
obelisk tapering down to a square plinth, a Sword of Sacrifice is on
the front face, the plinth is two stepped with a two-stepped base. The
memorial architect was Major Chadwick; the memorial was unveiled 8 January
1921 by Colonel Broome-Giles. Details appeared in the Buckingham
Advertiser and Free Press 15 January 1921 (see below), the North
Bucks Times 10 February 1921 and the Wolverton Express
14 January 1921. There are sixty nine names listed for World War 1 and
twenty five for World War 2.

BLETCHLEY
War
Memorial.—Col. P. Broome Giles, C.B., unveiled on Saturday the
Bletchley Urban District Central War Memorial, which has been erected
on the lawn in front of the boys department of the Council Schools,
from the design of Major Chadwick, Bletchley. The memorial is in the
form of an obelisk, of Portland stone, plain but impressive, and only
bears on the face, carved at the top a Crusader’s sword, and
at the base the words “To the Glorious Dead. 1914—1918.'’
Amongst the members of the Urban Council present were: Col. Giles
(Chairman), Mr. Dimmock (Vice-Chairman), Sir Herbert Leon. Bart..
Lieut.-Col. Deyns, Mr. Bramley, Mr. Stevens, Mr. Goodwin, Mr. Goodman,
Major Chadwick (Surveyor), and Mr. W. Charter Wilson. Lady Leon was
with Sir Herbert, and amongst others were Mr. Wallace A. Foll, Mr.
T. G. Kirby, with Mr. F. H. Clayfield (Chairman), Mr. E. W. Morgan,
and a good number of the Bletchley Branch of the N.F.D.D.S. and S.
The ceremony was quite short and simple, commencing with a hymn, led
by the united Church and Chapel Choirs, prayers by the Rev. W. T.
Edwards, Primitive Methodist Minister, the unveiling bv Col. Giles,
addresses by the Rev. B. Williams. Baptist Pastor, and the Rev. J.
H. Firminger, Vicar of Fenny Stratford, another hymn, the Benediction
pronounced by Mr. Williams, the "Last Post," sounded by
two buglers of the O. & B. L. I., concluding with the singing
of the National Anthem.

THE
LATE CAPTAIN G. W. BUXTON.
The
near relatives the late Captain Gurney White Buxton, R.A.M.C.,
have just had erected in St. Martin's Church, Fenny Stratford,
a bronze tablet to his memory. For 23 years Dr. Buxton was a general
medical practitioner in the town, and joined the Territorial Ambulance
some years ago. With his unit he proceeded to the Dardanelles
and the Gallipoli Peninsula, there contracting the illness from
which died at sea in September, 1915. Dr. Buxton was member of
the Royal College of Surgeons and Licentiate of the Royal College
of Physicians, London.

MEMORIAL
SERVICE.
St.
Martin Church was filled by large congregation on Monday evening,
when a memorial service was conducted by the Vicar (the Rev. J.
H. Firminger) for the late Dr. Gurney White Buxton, who died about
three weeks previously from illness contracted while on active
service with the Royal Army Medical Corps at the Dardanelles.
The service was quite short, but fully choral, consisting of the
90th Psalm, the hymns ’‘On the Resurrection morning.’’
’‘A few more years shall roll,” and “Alleluia,
Alleluia,” and a portion of the lesson from Corinthians
I. out of the Church of England Burial Service, with the collects
and prayers. Mr. C. Berwick wasat the organ, and at the close
of the service played the Dead March in “Saul.’’
Muffled peals were rung on the church bells. Amongst the congregation
were representatives of the public bodies of which Dr. Buxton
had served—the School Managers, tho local Higher Education
Committee (Mr. T. Marchant and Mr. J. Vaughan,) Inspector Callaway
and Sergeant Sneeling of the Bucks Constabulary, and a strong
representation from St. Martin’s Lodge of Freemasons, of
which he was a Past Master, these being Lieut.-Colonel A. Finlay,
P.M., Mr. D. C. Edward, P.M., Mr. C. Wadhams, P.M., the present
Worshipful Master (Bro. J. S. Harnett), Bro. C. Berwick. S.W.,
Bro. H. T. Fracy, S.D., Bro. W. Mayfield. J.D.. Bro. C. Bourne,
I.G., Bro. H. T. Clarke, Steward, and Bro. H. A. Staniford.

to have been killed in action. He was entitled to the 1914-15
Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. |
