WAVENDON ST MARY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is to be found in the church yard of St Mary's Church, Walton Road, Wavendon. It takes the form of a rough-hewn granite Celtic Cross with Sword of Sacrifice on front face set on a large square base. It was dedicated by Rev. J. E. Hyde and unveiled by Mrs Wauby 7 December 1919. There are 17 names liusted for World War 1 and 8 for World War 2.

In the 1901 census he was aged 11, born Leicestershire, a scholar, son of Henry and Emily Buxton, resident School House, Church End, Wavendon, Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 21, born Leicester, a Training College Student, resident Culham College, Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Worked for London County Council, Education Officer's Department, Teaching Staff. Buried in BOSCON BRITISH CEMETERY, Italy. Plot 2. Row A. Grave 5.

Private 305282, Tank Corps. Died of wounds 13th June 1918 [headstone states 30th]. Age 27. Born Wavendon, enlisted Bletchley. Son of Alfred and Amelia Collins; husband of Ethel Maud Collins, of The Nook, Wavendon. Born at Wavendon. Formerly 204218, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Buried west of the church in ST MARY CHURCHYARD, WAVENDON, Buckinghamshire.

In the 1891 census he was new born, born Buckinghamhsire, son of Alfred and Fanny J Devereux, resident Church End, Wavendon, Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 10, a scholar, born Wavendon, son of Alfred and Julia F (note initial reversal) Devereux, Church End, Wavendon, Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire. Baptised Wavendon. Buried in YPRES TOWN CEMETERY EXTENSION, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot II. Row A. Grave 37.

Private 57848, 16th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment attached 7th Battalion, Queen's Own (Royal West kent Regiment). Killed in action 25th April 1918. Aged 19. Born Wavendon, enlisted Bedford. Son of Thomas and Esther Garner of School Yard in Wavendon. Buried in HANGARD COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. Special memorial 4.

Note: The extension now contains 563 Commonwealth burials and commemorations of the First World War. 294 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to eight casualties known to be buried among them. Other special memorials commemorate nine casualties buried in Fontaine-les-Cappy Churchyard Extension and Gentelles French Military Cemetery, whose graves could not be found on concentration. Certain graves in Plots II, III, and IV, identified collectively but not individually, are marked by headstones inscribed with the words "Believed to be buried near this spot.".

Only son of Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, Bart., and Lady Alda Annie Hoare, of Stourhead, Zeals, Wilts. In the 1891 census he was aged 2, born Buckinghamshire, resident with his parents, Henry Hugh Arthur and Alda Annie Hoare, at Wavendon House, Cross End, Wavendon, Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 22, born Wavendon, a Land Agent, resident with his parents, Henry Hugh Arthur and Alda Annie Hoare, at Stourhead Bath, Stourton, Wiltshire. Buried in ALEXANDRIA (HADRA) WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY, Egypt. Section B. Grave 34.

In the 1911 census he was aged 19, born Wavendon, a Porter, boarding at 1, New Town Road, Northampton, Northamptonshire. No known grave. Commemorated at PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL, Hainaut, Belgium. WAVENDON.

Alfred Payne whose father and stepmother live at Cross End, fell in action May 9. He was only 22, joined Christmas, and had only been at the front nine days. Before the war he was a chauffeur in Northampton.

Enlisted into the Portsmouth Division as PO/22128 Marine. W.C.Ambridge. Son of Edgar and Sarah Ambridge; married, Violet Ambridge at Pontypridd, 28th October 1928. Walter Ambridge joined HMS Hood on the 8th August 1939 and was killed in action, 24th May 1941, during the battle with the German Battleship BISMARCK. No known grave. Commemorated on POR$ETSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 58, Column 2.

Only son of General Sir Charles Mansfield Clarke Baronet, G.C.B., G.C.V.O, & Gemma Ceclia Clarke. Educated at Eton College; left in 1890. Married Miss Douglas-Pennant in the Chelsea Registration District in the January to March Quarter 1915. Buried at WAVENDON (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD, Buckinghamshire. Also commemorated ona plaque within St. Mary's Church.
