World War 1 & 2 - Detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards 2019

This memorial is located on the cliff top behind the Bayswell Hotel, Bayswell Park, Dunbar. It takes the form of a cross standing on a three-stepped plinth base which carries the names of the fallen. The inscription is located on the shaft of the cross. The names from World War 1 are located on the top step incised directly into the stone with those commemorating the fallen of World War 2 added on plaques to the stone face of the second tier. A name from the Malayan conflict is also recorded. The memorial is surrounded by a low fence and approached via a coastal path. There are 135 names for World War 1, 66 names for World War 2, and one for Malaya.

DEATH OF SIR GEORGE
WARRENDER.

DISTINGUISHED NAVAL
SERVICES.

We regret to announce that the illness of Vice-Admiral Sir George Warrender, which obliged him to relinquish the post of Commander-In-Chief at Plymouth just over a month ago, terminated fatally yesterday at his house in London.

Sir George was in his fifty-seventh year. On account of his ill-health he was placed on the retired list at his own request on December 6. He had had a varied and distinguished career in the Navy, and was a very popular officer and capable seaman. During the early months of the war he served as Second-in-Command of the Grand Fleet under Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, with his flag in the King George V. He had been unable to retain this arduous post, however, and had been appointed to the Western Port Command before the battle of Jutland was fought.

George John Scott Warrender, second son of the sixth baronet, was born in Scotland on July 31, 1860. He entered the Navy as a cadet in 1873. As a midshipman he served in the Raleigh and afterwards in the Boadicea, from which ship he landed with the Naval Brigade in the Zulu war, and accompanied the Eshowe Relief Column. He was also present at the battle of Gingihlovo, and received the Zulu medal and clasp. In the same year, 1879, he became a sub-lieutenant, and a lieutenant in 1880, taking three "firsts" in his examinations. In that rank he specialized in gunnery, and achieved a high reputation in that capacity. He was promoted to commander in 1893, from the Active, flagship of the Training Squadron, and to captain in 1898, after three years' service as commander of the Royal yacht. His first employment as a captain was as Flag-Captain to Rear-Admiral Sir James Bruce, whose flag flew in the Barfleur, as Second-in-Command on the China station. He took part in the operations against the Boxers in 1900, and for this he received a C.B. In 1907 he commanded the East Indies Squadron as a commodore, and afterwards as a rear-admiral, on his promotion to that rank in July, 1908. Returning from that command in 1909, he was appointed in 1910 to the command of the Second Cruiser Squadron, which he held, until 1912, when he was transferred to the command of the Second Battle Squadron. At the Coronation celebrations in Dublin, in July, 1911, he commanded the naval contingent at the great review in Phoenix Park, and was awarded the K.C.V.O. by King George. He became a vice-admiral in June, 1913.

Sir George Warrender succeeded to the title on the death of his father in 1901, his elder brother having died some years before. He married, in 1894, Lady Maud Ashley, daughter of the eighth Earl of Shaftesbury. Both were well known and highly popular in London society. Lady Maud survives him, and'there were three children of the marriage, two sons and one daughter. The elder son, Victor Alexander Anthony George, who succeeds to the title, was born in 1899, and was a godson of Queen Victoria.

Extract from V.C. and D.S.O. Book Volume II:

WINGATE, MALCOLM ROY, Lieut., was born 28 Aug. 1893, at Whitehill, Newton Abbot, second son of General Sir Francis Reginald Wingate, G.C.B., G.C.V.O., Sirdar of the Egyptian Army, High Commissioner of Egypt, and Catherine Leslie, his wife, daughter of the late Capt. Joseph Sparkhall Rundle, Royal Navy. He was educated at Locker's Park, Hemel Hempstead, and at Winchester, passing 17th into Woolwich from Winchester in 1911. He passed out 10th in Dec. 1912, obtaining a commission in the Royal Engineers as Second Lieutenant. He joined at Chatham in April, 1913, the School of Military Engineering. On mobilization at the commencement of the European War in 1914 he was appointed to the 26th Field Company, Royal Engineers (1st Division. Expeditionary Force, Border Camp, Major H. Pritchard). He proceeded to France on the 14th Aug.; was in the Retreat from Mons; took part in operations on the Marne and Aisne, and at Ypres, fighting with his Field Company in all the fierce actions of that period. He was mentioned in Despatches in Feb. and March, 1915; was awarded the Military Cross [London Gazette, 19 Feb. 1915], and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 10 March 1915]: “Malcolm Roy Wingate, Lieut., 26th Field Company, Royal Engineers. For conspicuous gallantry on numerous occasions under dangerous conditions, especially at Givenchy on 27 Jan. 1915, when he led a small party and blew in the head of the enemy's sap at the Whit-House." In Aug. 1915, he was appointed to the Staff as Staff Captain to the Engineer-in-Chief at General Headquarters in France, where he remained until 1917. During that time he was awarded the Croix de Guerre. He considered, however, that his place was at the front, and he asked to be allowed to return to a field company, which was eventually permitted. He was again mentioned in Despatches in May and Dec. 1917, and was given the Brevet of Major on 1 Jan. 1918, after considerably less than five years' service. He was commanding the 459th Field Company when he fell in action 21 March, 1918, aged twenty-four, when leading men forward to their battle positions during the enemy's attack. A correspondent writes: “His strength of character was concealed under a singularly quiet, courteous and unassuming manner. He was resolute of purpose, punctilous in the discharge of his duty and fearless in carrying it out."

Note: The 2nd Battalion was once more involved in war, however, when it deployed to Malaya during the native insurgency there as part of the 2nd Guards Brigade. The State of Emergency in Malaya had been declared in June after increased violence and terrorist acts against British, Asian and other citizens were perpetrated by the Malayan Races Liberation Army (MRLA), an organisation made up largely of ethnic Chinese Communists who opposed the creation of the Federation of Malaya as they believed it did not directly lead to the creation of a Communist state, and also opposed the British Empire. The Communist insurgents were originally known as 'Bandits' but this was soon replaced with the term CT (Communist Terrorist). The battalion arrived in Malaya in October with the rest of the Guards Brigade and in 1950, the battalion joined the 18th Infantry Brigade, the retitled 2nd Guards Brigade.

During its time in Malaya, the 2nd Battalion performed a variety of duties, including, in their involvement in the Emergency, guarding duties due to the Malayan Police's manpower problems, but also performed more aggressive tasks, such as patrolling into the dense jungle, hunting for CT. The patrols were difficult for the Commonwealth forces, who did not know where the CT lurked, and who had to contend with all the many aspects of the jungle, such as the diverse animals and sounds that make the jungle their home (especially leeches), and the claustrophobia of such a place, with the soldiers having probably been accustomed to living in relatively wide-open cities. A very apparent danger was the deadly booby traps laid by the CT. Patrols at times, despite hard slogging in the energy-sapping jungle, gave very little to show for the hard-work, but when contact was made with the CT, it invariably ended in fierce, close-quarters combat, with much valour and professionalism often displayed by the battalion. In 1948, the Scots Guards were involved in the Batang Kali massacre. By the time the battalion departed Malaya in 1951 for home. it had lost thirteen officers and other ranks. The Emergency was declared over on 31 July 1960, the Communists had been defeated.
