TAYLOR, THOMAS RALPH, 2nd Lieut., 6th (Territorial) Battn. The Lancashire Fusiliers, yr. s. of Edward Lyon Taylor, of Rochdale, Solicitor, by his wife, Alice, dau. of Thomas Watson, M.P. ; b. Rochdale, co. Lancaster, 27 April, 1887 ; educ. Mill Hill School ; was a Solicitor, and a member of the firm of Standring, Taylor & Co., of Rochdale ; at his final Law Examination he took Honours, and was awarded the " John Peacock " Prize, which is given yearly by the Manchester Law Association to the man who passes highest in this examination from among the Clerks articled to Manchester Solicitors ; joined the Territorials in Sept. 1914 ; was gazetted 2nd Lieut. The Lancashire Fusiliers the following month ; landed with his battalion on the Gallipoli Peninsula early in May, 1915 ; served with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force there ; was slightly wounded in the advance on Krithia and Achi Baba Hill 10 June, and sent to hospital at Cairo ; on recovery he rejoined his regiment in July, and was killed in action at the Vineyard on the Krithia Road 7 Aug. 1915. A brother officer wrote : " He did very gallant work that morning, and led his men with the utmost bravery after the senior officers had been killed, and he was at close grips with the enemy when he fell." LIEUTENANT HAROLD D. THEWLIS, 1/7th BATTN. (TERRIT.) THE MANCHESTER REGIMENT, born in Manchester on the 27th July, 1890, was the only son of J. Herbert Thewlis, Daisy Mount, Victoria Park, Manchester, Ex-Lord Mayor of that City. He was educated at Woodlands School, Fallowfleld and Deganwy, and subsequently at the Manchester Grammar School. He took his B.Sc. degree at Manchester University, and was studying Scientific Agriculture when the War broke out in August, 1914. Mr. Thewlis had been an active member of the University O.T.C., and received his commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 1/7th Battalion Manchester Regiment in November, 1912, becoming Lieutenant in September, 1914. Having undertaken Imperial Service obligations, he accompanied the Battalion to Khartoum, where he was second officer in command of the British Camel Company of the Soudan. In April, 1915, he left Khartoum for the Gallipoli Peninsula, and was killed in action near Krithia, while leading his men in the general advance on the 4th June, 1915.

Son of the late Sir Ernest John Trevelyan, D.C.L., and Julia Isabel Trevelyan, of 1 Marston Ferry Road, Oxford. Born 10th October 1893 in Calcutta. Baptised 14th November 1893 in Calcutta,St Paul, Bengasl, India, son of Ernest John and Julia Isabel Trevelyan. Educated at Rugby School.
