BRESSINGHAM WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information

The Bressingham War Memorial, which is situated on the corner of High Road and School Road, Bressinghan, Norfolk. It takes the form of an obelisk with ornamental wreath with dates 1914 -19 superimposed on front face toward top; the whole stands on a vertical rectangular plinth with a two-tier, inward, stepped base with all the lettering in black. The surrounding area is laid with paving stones. The dedication is at the top of a rectangular foundation followed by names in single column beneath with a biblical quotation on top stone of base. The dedication for World War 2, and the World War 2 names, are on an unrecessed bottom stone of the base. There are twelve names for World War 1 and three names for World War 2.

Son of James and Ellen Flatman, of White Horse Lane, Bressingham Common. Buried in BRESSINGHAM (ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST) CHURCHYARD AND NEW CHURCHYARD, Norfolk.
FORTIS John
Private 4804, "A" Company, 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 15 May 1917. Aged 36. Born Bressingham, Norfolk, enlisted Norwich, Norfolk. Husband of Mabel Jane Fortis, of Billericay Rd., Herongate, Brentwood, Essex. Buried in ORCHARD DUMP CEMETERY, ARLEUX-EN-GOHELLE, Pas de Calais, France. Plot VI. Row J. Grave 13.
GARLAND [Edgar] George
Sapper 85693, 34th Division Signal Company, Royal Engineers. Killed in action 3 August 1916. 22. Born Newbold, Derbyshire, resident Bressingham, Norfolk, enlisted Norwich. Son of Mr. A. O. Garland, of Lang Fen Farm, South Torpham. Diss, Norfolk. Buried in DANTZIG ALLEY BRITISH CEMETERY, MAMETZ, Somme, France. Plot I. Row A. Grave 35.
GOODSWEN Thomas Edward
Rifleman 388026, 8th (City of London) Battalion (Post Office Rifles), London Regiment formerly 2885, 4th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 29 October 1918. Aged 25. Born Pulham Market, Norfolk, resident and enlisted Diss. Son of Mr. G. Goodswen, of Fen St., Bressingham, Diss, Norfolk. Buried in TOURNAI COMMUNAL CEMETERY ALLIED EXTENSION, Hainaut, Belgium. HALL George Herbert
Private 17235, 3rd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Died in United Kingdom 15 January 1915. Aged 17. Born Bressingham, Norfolk, enlisted Norwich, Norfolk. Son of Mr. H. Hall, of Heywood, Diss. Buried on the North boundary by Lychgate in BRESSINGHAM (ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST) CHURCHYARD AND NEW CHURCHYARD, Norfolk.
HOSKINS George Henry
Corporal 78949, 144th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died in United Kingdom 26 February 1919. Aged 22. Son of James and Annie Hoskins, of High Rd., Bressingham. Buried in BRESSINGHAM (ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST) CHURCHYARD AND NEW CHURCHYARD, Norfolk.
KENT Herbert Charles
Private 76328, 2nd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment formerly T/4/084279, Royal Army Service Corps. Died on service in Salonika 8 October 1918. Aged 25. Born Bressingham, Norfolk, enlisted Norwich, Norfolk. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Maria Kent, of "Ruskin", Birkbeck Rd., Mill Hill, London. Native of Bressingham, Norfolk. Buried in KIRECHKOI-HORTAKOI MILITARY CEMETERY, Greece. Grave 257.
LEIGHTON William Robert
Private 15476, 9th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 27 September 1915. Born 22 December 1893 in Leyton, Essex, baptised as an adult 27 March 1914 in Bressingham, enlisted Norwich, Norfolk. In the 1911 census he was a servant to Dr. Hugh Meredith, aged 16, in London, a Surgery Boy, resident The Cedars, Mount Street, Diss, Norfolk. No known grave. Commemorated on LOOS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 30 and 31.
PARSLEY Charles William
Sergeant 14972, 9th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 3 April 1917. Aged 21. Born Diss, Norfolk, enlisted Norwich, Norfolk. Son of Charles Joseph and Violet Elizabeth Parsley, of Hall Cottages, Bressingham, Diss, Norfolk. Twice previously wounded. Buried in VERMELLES BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot VI. RAWLINSON Victor James Milton

Private 41168, 9th (Service) Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment formerly 4034, Army Pay Corps. Killed in action 27 October 1918. Aged 26. Born Forest Gate, Essex, enlisted London. Son of James Lingley Rawlinson, of Bressingham; husband of Louisa M. Rawlinson, of 7, Idmiston Rd., West Norwood, London. Buried in LE CATEAU MILITARY CEMETERY, Nord, France. Plot II. Row A. RAWLINSON—BUTTLE. — On Sept. 5th, at Bressingham Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. T. A. Nock, Victor James Milton, of the 6th Leinsters, only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Rawlinson, of Bressingham, late of West Norwood, to Louisa Mary (May), youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Ruffle, of Idmiston-road, West Norwood.

Private 5774004, 5th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment. Captured 7 February 1942. Died from malnutrition as a Japanese Prisoner of War 26 September 1943. Aged 28. Born 11 November 1917. Son of Ethel Hall and the late Denis Hall; husband of Gladys (nee Shipley) Hall, of Wood Farm, Bressingham, Norfolk, married April to June Quarter 1941, In Depwade Registration District, Norfolk. Buried in CHUNGKAI WAR CEMETERY, Thailand. Plot 1. Row L. Grave 7.

HARVEY Basil Thomas

5777757, Royal Engineers. Died while in service 16 September 1946 at The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, Norwich, subsequent to release to Class Z (T), Army Reserve. Aged 26. Resident Bressingham. Buried 20 September 1946 in BRESSINGHAM, Norfolk.

HARVEY-Treasured memories or our dearest Basil, who was taken from us, September 16th, 1946, aged 26. With us for only a little while, after six years' service with the Royal Engineers. Every day is remembrance day for us.

WITTON Alec George

Gunner 1522935, 7/4 Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery. Killed in action at sea when S.S. Grayburn was sunk by enemy action 29 June 1941. Aged 24. Born South Lapsham, Diss, Norfolk, resident Fersfield, Diss, Norfolk. Son of Leonard and Ethel Witton, of Fersfield, Norfolk. An Old Dyssean. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 62, Column 3.
