ROYDON WAR MEMORIAL

Roydon war memorial is to be found on the left outside the main church front wall of St Remigius Church, High Road, Roydon, Norfolk. It takes the the form of a smooth worked wheel Cross on square plinth. There are 19 names listed for World War 1 and 3 for World War 2. The memorial was orginally dedicated and unveiled by Rector, the Reverend H C Frere, Sunday 3 October 1920, and subsequently rededicated and unveiled 5 September 1948, Mr R S Copeman (Chairman of the Parish Council) unveiling the memorial and Rector, the Reverend W R J Higgitt, dedicating it. The names here have been sorted into alphabetical order within conflict.

Private 2482, 9th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. Killed in action 26 September 1915. Born Diss, Norfolk, resident Wortham Ling, Surrey, enlisted Richmond, Surrey. In the 1891 census he was the son of Charles and Diana Barham, aged 5 months, born Roydon, Norfolk, resident Shelfanger Road, Roydon, Guiltcross, Norfolk. Attested 14 September 1914 in Richmond, Surrey, a Compositor by trade, born Diss, aged 22, enlisted in East Surrey Regiment, heoght 5 feet 7 inches, weight 140 lbs, blue eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion, chest 33-35 inches. No known grave. Commemorated on LOOS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 65 to 67.
BATTLEY Ernest Albert
Private 328015, "D" Company, 1st/1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment formerly 6636, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died of wounds 30 August 1917. Aged 36. Born South Lopham, Norfolk, enlisted Bury St. Edmunds. Son of the late George and Hannah Battley, of Roydon, Diss; husband of Lottie Battley, of Roydon Green, Diss, Norfolk. Buried in BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY, Pas de Caklais, France. Plot VIII. Row I. Grave 21.

Private 16372, 9th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 15 September 1916. Aged 20. Born Roydon, Norfolk, enlisted Norwich, Norfolk. Son of Joseph and A. M. Bloomfield, of Roydon, Diss, Norfolk. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 1 C and 1 D.

CHAMBERS Charles
Private 36379, 8th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. Killed in action 4 April 1918. Born Redlingfield, Suffolk, resident Royden Fen, Norfolk, enloisted Norwich. In the 1911 census he was the son of John and Grace Chambers, brother of Ernest (below), aged 12, born Redlingfield, Eye, Suffolk, at school, resident Brewers Green, Roydon, Diss, Norfolk. CHAMBERS Ernest

Corporal 19308, 2nd/6th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Killed in France 28 April 1918. In the 1911 census he was the son of John and Grace Chambers, brother of Charles (above), aged 15, born Eye, Suffolk, working on farm, resident Brewers Green, Roydon, Diss, Norfolk. Buried in MENIN ROAD SOUTH MILITARY CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot III. Row E. Grave 2.

CHAMBERS. - In loving memory of Corpl. Ernest Chambers, 2/6 Batt. Royal Fusiliers, eldest son of Mr. J. and G. Chambers, Roydon, who was killed in France, April 28th, 1918, aged 22 years.

In the 1911 census he was the son of William Robert and Mary Ann Potter, aged 20, born Roydon, Norfolk, assisting in his father's bakery, resident Stores Street, Roydon, Diss, Norfolk. Reisdent Suthuland, New South Wales, Australia. Born Roydon, Diss, Norfolk. Emigrated aged 22. Civil employment in Australia Railway Worker. In the 1911 census he was the son of Arthur Harry and Julia Selina Vincent, aged 17, born Palgrave, Sufflk, a Brushmaker, resident Tottington, Roydon, Diss, Norfolk. Enlisted 18 September 1912 for 12 years. height 5 feet 6½ inchs, chest 36½ inches, brown hair, bue eyes, fresh complexion. Civil occupation Assistant Cook Shore Establishment. No known grave. Civilian. Daughter of Walter William and Frances Ruth Key Brand, of South View, Mellis, Suffolk. Died in an Air Raid at The Hall, Roydon, 23 September 1940. Aged 44. Born 5 July 1896, baptised at Bressingham. 1 April 1917, daughter of Walter William and Frances Ruth Key Brand; her father was a farmer. She was resident Roydon Hall, Diss. In the 1939 Register she was born 5 July 1896, single, a Cook, resident The Hall, Snow Street, Depwade R.D., Norfolk. Recorded by DEPWADE, RURAL DISTRICT, Norfolk. Buried 25 September 1940 in ROYDON, near Diss, Norfolk.
