of Hunstanton, Norfolk. Born 16 April 1890 in Hunstanton, Norfolk,
baptised 25 May 1890 in Old Hunstanton (St Mary's), Norfolk. Enlisted
London. Admitted to the school in May 1900; previously educated
at Miss Cook's, of Lynfield, Hunstanton; son of C. Andrews of
Victoria Buildings, Hunstanton (a Wine Merchant). Left school
Christmas 1906. In the 1901 census he was aged 10, a school boy,
born Hunstanton, son of Charles Andrews, a widower, resident Victoria
Buildings, 5, Greeve Gate, New Hunstanton, Docking, Norfolk. In
the 1911 census he was aged 20, a Chemist Assistant, born Hunstanton,
resident with his widowed father, Charles Andrews, at Victoria
Building, New Hunstanton, Norfolk. Buried in ST. VAAST POST MILITARY

The Royal Sussex Regiment., 3rd and yst. s. of Charles
Andrews, of Hunstanton, Wine and Spirit Merchant, and brother
to Private E. C. Andrews (q.v.); b. Hunstanton, co. Norfolk,
16 April, 1890 ; educ. Lynfleld Preparatory School there, and
King Edward VII.'s Grammar School, King's Lynn; was apprenticed
as a Chemist at Hunstanton, being subsequently employed with several
London firms, during which time he studied at a Pharmaceutical
College, with a view to passing his final examination; enlisted
in Nov. 1914; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and
Flanders, and was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme
early in the morning of 1 July, 1916. Buried in the British Soldiers'
Cemetery, just behind the firing line. A comrade wrote : "Quite
early on the morning of July 1st we were ordered to attack ; he
was one of the first to get over, and was last seen throwing his
bombs at a machine gun." Unm.

due to effects of shell-wounds and gas poisoning 13 May 1918.

Lynn, 24/2/1895, the son of William, a railway signalman, and
Sarah Ann Bates, of 6, Louisa Terrace, West Lynn. Baptised at
All Saints', 17/7/1895. Server at All Saints' Church from the
age of 14. He was the first pupil from West Lynn School to win
a scholarship to King Edward's School, King's Lynn. Became a theological
student at St. Chad's College, Durham.
Applied
for a commission in the Artists Rifles, February, 1916, but was
rejected due to defective eyesight. He joined the Durham Light
Infantry on 10/2/1916, service number 32278. Joined the DLI Depot
at Newcastle, 16 May 1916 and was transferred to the Labour Corps,
as 316911, Private, 471 (Home Service) Employment Company on 30
June 1917. On 13 May 1917 he again applied for a commission and
was described as 'a suitable candidate for a Labour or Works Battalion,'
He was attached to the Garrison Officer Cadet Battalion, Jesus
College, Cambridge, from 20 August 1917 and he joined the O.C.B.
at Cambridge on 27 August 1917. He was subsequently commissioned
into the Labour Corps, London Gazette 6 December1917.

March 1918 posted to Labour Corps Base Depot, Boulogne. 13 March
1918 to hospital with Tonsillitis. 10 April 1918 posted to 101
Company, Labour Corps. 13 May 1918, died of wounds (gas) at No.
2 British Red Cross Hospital, Rouen. His company had been involved
in laying communication lines near Foncquevillers and was caught
by heavy German gas shelling. The company sustained heavy casualties
- the heaviest losses of the Labour Corps in the war. Several
of his effects were sent home, including his rosary.
His
service papers are at the National Archive (WO339/108992). Note
CWGC gives his Regiment as the DLI.

family's law firm and lived at Swaffham, Norfolk. He was gazetted
2nd Lieut in 6th Norfolk Reg. (Cyclists') in 17th Sept 1908. July
27 1916 he was seconded to the Warwickshire Rgt. WWI: He joined
BEF in France Went to attached to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment.
on 4th June 1916. Capt 6th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. 19th July
1916. Killed in Action, Fromelles, France, while leading a charge
against German lines. Seen to fall, no body recovered but notification
of death from German authorities. Dog tag returned to widow. [Details

of an enemy attack, breaking their attack up. He also led a bombing
squad successfully, rallied and reorganized stragglers, and by
his fine example greatly conduced to the splendid resistance made
by his men.

Regiment., yr. s. of Herbert Charles King, of Hunstanton,
Civil Servant in the Inland Revenue Department (retired), by his
wife, Julia, dau. of the late Robert Pratt, of Wing-land, Terrington
St. Clement, co. Norfolk ; b. Stamford Hill, London,
N., 30 Sept. 1896 ; educ. Private School, Clapton Common, and
King Edward VII Grammar School, King's Lynn; was a Bank Clerk
at Diss; joined the 1st Public Schools Battn. The Royal Fusiliers
in June, 1915 ; served with the Expeditionary Force in France
and Flanders from the following Oct.; was badly gassed near La
Bassée on 13 Feb. 1916, and, being recommended for a commission,
returned to England in May; trained at Cambridge, and was gazetted
2nd Lieut. The Suffolk Regiment. 26 Sept. 1916; returned to France
30 Oct., being attached to the Divisional Scouting Coy. in Jan.,
and was killed in action on the Hulluch Road, near Vermelles,
the night of 12-13 Feb. 1917, during a raid on German dug-outs.
His Colonel wrote : "I am particularly sorry to lose your
son, as he was a most excellent officer; brave, very keen on his
work, and getting on very well. I think his greatest pleasure
was when he was patrolling well out by the German lines. When
I selected him to join the raiding party he was very pleased,
and told me it was just what he would like, and thanked me for
choosing him. On the 11th inst. he asked me whether he could take
part in a rumoured raid to take place in the future," and
another: "The raid was unsuccessful, and he was killed by
the explosion of the mobile charge ; it was impossible to bring
his body back to our lines, owing to the casualties amongst the

JAMES ANDREW, Lieut., 8th (Service) Battn. The Norfolk
Regiment., 3rd s. of James Lewton-Brain, of The Mill
House, Toftwood, Dereham, by his wife, Clare, dau. of William
Andrew Lawrence; b. Swanton Morley, co. Norfolk, 25 March,
1888 ; educ. King Edward VII Grammar School, King's Lynn; was
employed in the London and Provincial Bank (Great Yarmouth Branch);
then received an appointment in the Bank of Montreal (Vancouver,
later Victoria Branch); on the outbreak of war he enlisted in
the Canadian Highlanders; served with the Expeditionary Force
in France and Flanders until Jan. 1916, when he returned to England;
obtained a commission as 2nd Lieut. 23 Jan. 1916; again went to
France; was promoted Lieut. 18 March, 1917, and died at Poperinghe
of gas poisoning and wounds 14 Aug. following. Buried there. His
Commanding Officer wrote: "I can hardly express to you what
a loss he is to all of us, both officers and men of this battalion.
He was a splendid stamp of officer, and a good leader, and was
my Battalion Machine Gun Officer, and of great value to me. And
as we are in action at the moment of writing, it is difficult
for me to give you many particulars; but he died a few hours after
his attack, so, please God, he did not suffer too much. He was
so popular with us all, we shall miss him terribly," and
a brother officer: "He was very popular amongst us all; not
only the officers but all the men knew him well. I can assure
you that your loss is shared by us all; his place will he hard
to fill in our midst." He was well known in the Dereham and
Yarmouth districts as an enthusiastic football player and cricketer:

YEARS AT YARMOUTH.
Official
news has just been received that Lieutenant James Andrew Lewton-Brain,
Norfolk Regiment, third son of Mr, J. Lewton-Brain, of Toftwood,
East Dereham, has died of wounds and gas.
Lieutenant
J. A. Lewton-Brain was a native of Swanton Morley. He waa educated
at King Edward VII. Grammar School, King's Lynn. After leaving
School, choosing a financial career, he obtained a post in the
London and Provincial Bank, and was stationed at Great Yarmouth,
where he remained five years. He then received an appointment
in the Bank of Montreal, and was stationed at the Vancouver
branch for three years, when he was transferred to the Victoria
branch as cashier, and remained there until the outbreak of
the war when he immediately enlisted in the Canadian Highlanders.
He came over to England with his battalion in April, 1915, and
remained here only a fortnight, when he was sent on active service
to France, where he served for nine months, and in January,
1916, received his commission, and was attached to the Norfolks.
He was gazetted as lieutenant at the end of Aprll 1917. He was
well-known in the Dereham and Yarmouth districts as an enthusiastic
football player and cricketer. He was one of the Dereham team
who won the county shield.

Born 22 May 1883. Admitted to school September 1893 as a Day Boy,
son of T Pattrick, of 34 London Road, King's Lynn. Left for Uppingham
School Christmas 1897. In the 1891 census he was aged 7, born
Cambridgeshire, son of Thomas and Marion Pattrick, resident Abbey
Green, Church End, Newton, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. In the 1901
census he was aged 17, born Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, a Timber
Merchants Pupil, son of Thomas and Marion Pattrick. resident London
Road, South Lynn, Kings Lynn, Norfolk. He married Alice Isobel
Mary Gibson Hoff at Shouldham Thorpe on 30 August 1911. He was
a partner in the firm of Pattrick and Thompson Ltd., timber merchants,
Lynn. His Officer's Service Paper details (WO374/52729) show that
he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Volunteer Battalion,
Norfolk Regiment, 27/9/1902, and Lieutenant 14/12/1906. The battalion
became the 5th Norfolk Regiment, territorial Force on 1 April
1908. He trained with the Grenadier Guards at Chelsea Barracks
and there qualified for his captaincy, which he received on the
retirement of Capt. E. M. Beloe in February 1914 (actual date
7 March 1914). Embodied for service 5/8/1914. Reported missing
12 August 1915, death accepted as this date by a committee of
adjustment under General Murray, 11 July 1916. Arthur commanded
the Lynn Company of the 1/5th at Anafarta. In the attack he was
seen to have been wounded, and was reported to have been disarmed
and taken prisoner. Speculation as to his fate continued well
into 1916 with newspaper reports claiming that photographs of
him in a Turkish prison camp had been seen. No known grave. Commemorated
at HELLES MEMORIAL, Turkey (including Gallipoli). Panel 43 to

LIEUTENANT
JAMES VANCE, 2nd BATTN. ESSEX REGIMENT, who was killed
in action on the 21st October, 1914, was the eldest son of the
late W. J. Vance, Surgeon, Bexleyheath, Kent, and of Mrs. Vance,
3, Vanbrugh Fields, Blackheath.
He was born on the 2nd January, 1886, and was educated at Dover
College (St. Martin's House), where he was in the Cricket XI,
1903-04 ; and at the R.M.C., Sandhurst. He received his commission
in February, 1906, becoming Lieutenant in January, 1911.
He had been slightly wounded on the 20th September, 1914, but
did not leave the trenches. His servant gave the following account
of his death : "'D' Company had just relieved the Rifle Brigade,
at Le Gert, when they were immediately attacked by an enfilade
fire from the enemy. Lieutenant Vance, who was in charge of two
platoons, directed the men to leave the trenches, and then gave
the command to charge. His words were, Come on, men ! Charge the
bounders ! ' Taking the lead, he was shot through the abdomen.
The action had a victorious result."
Lieutenant Vance played hockey and football for his regiment.
