The
Church was at various times dedicated to St. John the Evangelist and
St. John the Baptist but at some time after 1912 the dedication was
changed to St. John the Baptist, to whose dedication the church remains.
The memorial is to be found in the chapel and takes the form of a wooden
shrine affixed to the far wall, by the altar. An addiitonal name if
to be found on a brass plaque. The names are sorted into order here
for ease of reading and rsearch.

Aged 41. His birth was registered September Quarter 1878 at Leeds.
In 1899 he married Beatrice Eleanor STANLEY at Saltash – marriage
registered June Quarter at St. Germans. Beatrice Eleanor Stanley
was the daughter of Charles & Anne Stanley of Tamar Street,
Saltash. In the 1901 census he was aged 24, living at 2, Home Park
Villas, Saltash with wife & one yare old son Arthur Harold.
His occupation was Engine Room Artificer, Royal Navy. Entitled to
the 1914-15 Star, Victory & British War Medals. Medals sent
to his widow Mrs, B. E. Bancroft. In the 1911 Census he was aged
33 on board HMS MEDEA as an Artificer Engineer- HMS Medea was a
Marathon class second class cruiser launched in 1888 and sold in
1914. His wife Beatrice E Bancroft, was aged 33, living at 4 Sea
View Terrace, Saltash, Cornwall, with two children Arthur Harold
age 11 and Beatrice May age 5. He is on the Register of Seaman Services,
Official Number 269249, born Leeds, Yorkshire, 30 January 1877.
His death was recorded in the October-December Quarter 1918 in Yarmouth
Registration District, Norfolk. Buried (19 December 1918) in ST.
STEPHEN'S-BY-SALTASH (ST. STEPHEN) CHURCHYARD, Cornwall. See also

baptised on the 8th of March 1899 at Saltash. His parents were Nicholas
and Beatrice Doris of 16 Fore Street Saltash, then of 12, Lockyer
Terrace, Saltash, Cornwall. His father was a stoker in the Royal
Navy. He enlisted 14 February 1917 for 12 years. Height 5 feet,
chest 30½ inches, light brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion.
Buried in SALONIKA (LEMBET ROAD) MILITARY CEMETERY, Greece. Grave
1617.

Born 14 March 1880 in Collington, Cornwall. In 1911 he was living
at 117 Fore Street, Saltash, Leading Stoker, Royal Navy, aged 31,
husband of Annie Rebecca Buckingham, father of Dora Frances and
John, both born Saltash. He enlisted 2 November 1899 for 12 years
and then re-enlisted 2 November 1911. He was a labourer by trade,
height 5 feet 6 inches, dark brown haor, blue eyes, fresh complexion.

Note:
H.M.S "Monmouth" - Built London and Glasgow, Glasgow,
laid down August 1899, completed December 1903. Assigned as part
of 5th Cruiser Squadron, Atlantic. Involved in the hunt for the
Admiral Graf Spee in the South Atlantic. Sunk during the naval
battle off the coast of central Chile, at Coronel 1st November
1914 (Battle of Coronel). With the seas difficult (to the disadvantage
of the British) Spee reacted by moving his faster vessels out
of Cradock's firing range; at sunset - 7pm - with the moon clearly
silhouetting Cradock's fleet, he began to shell the latter's force,
with Scharnhorst's third salvo crippling the flagship Good Hope;
both Good Hope and Monmouth were destroyed shortly afterwards,
Monmouth under repeated battering.

June 1915. Aged 22. Son of William Wenmoth Pryn and lsabella Kate
Pryn, of Yeoland, Yelverton, Devon. In the 1911 census he was aged
18, born Ascension Island, a Medical Student, resident 143 Grange
Road, Bermondsey, London, living with his Aunt Amy Maria Marshall
who was born in St Stapbeasby Saltash, Cornwall. Buried in LIJSSENTHOEK
MILITARY CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. Row A. Grave

LIEUTENANT
(temp.) WILLIAM REGINALD PRYN, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL
CORPS, was the eldest son of Deputy-Surgeon-General W.
W. Pryn, R.N., and Mrs. Pryn, Royal Naval Hospital, Gibraltar,
and a grandson of the late Major John Cotter, The Buffs.
Lieutenant Pryn was born in Ascension Island on the 28th September,
1892, and was educated at Kelly College, Tavistock, and Guy's
Hospital, London. When the war broke out he was House Surgeon
at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, but he immediately
offered his services to the War Office, and in August, 1914, he
was gazetted Temporary Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
At first he served in No. 11 General Hospital, Rouen, and St.
Nazaire, and in September, 1914, he was attached as Medical Officer
to the 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. That appointment
terminated in May, 1915, when Lieutenant Pryn was attached to
No. 9 Field Ambulance. lie died on the 27th June, 1915, at No.
10 Casualty Clearing Station. His death was due to accidental
burning while he was on temporary duty with the Wiltshire
Regiment, which was at that time in the firing line. He was buried
in the Military Cemetery near Poperinghe, Belgium.
