The War Memorial is to be found in St Lawrence Churchyard, Swindon village (Grid Reference: SO 034249) and was unveiled 13th April 1920. The unveiling ceremony was reported in the Gloucestershire Echo published on 14th April 1920

CAREY Alfred Charles

Private 420266, 43rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment). Killed in action 16 August 1916 at Ypres. Aged 27. Born 18 April 1899 in Cheltenham. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Carey, of Cheltenham, England; husband of Elizabeth Carey, of 3725, Pender St. East, Vancouver, British Columbia (originally living at 220 ForestAvenue when he enlisted). Tinsmith by trade. Enlisted and passed fit 18 December 1914 at Winnipeg aged 26 years 8 months. Height 5 feet 8 inches, girth 36 inches, complexion pale, eyes blue, hair fair. Religion Prebyterian. Buried in RAILWAY DUGOUTS BURIAL GROUND, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Valley Cottages Cem. Mem. B. 9. CLIFT Robert Charles

Private 235269, 2nd/4th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. Died of illness 16 January 1918 on the Somme. Aged 27. Buried in TINCOURT NEW BRITISH CEMETERY, Somme, France. Plot IV. Row G. Grave 8. [Not found on SDGW]

CULL Albert Edward

Private 63364, 152nd Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Killed in action at Rouex, France 15 May 1917. Aged 20. Born and enlisted Cheltenham. His parents, Robert W. and Louisa Cull, resided at "Cotteswold", Swindon Village. Formerly 30618, Gloucestershire Regiment. Buried in ROUEX BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Row A. Grave 29. Commemorated on a plaque in St Lawrence Church.

 

GABELL Douglas Ridley Charles

Captain, 13 Training Squadron, Royal Air Force. Killed in a flying accident near Chippenham 12 July 1918. Aged 20. His father, the Reverend Arthur Charles Gabell was Rector of St Lawrence Church, Swindon Village. Killed in the same aircraft accident as Lt Delmar-Williamson (see Leckhampton War Memorial and Leckhampton Cemetery). Captain Gabell is buried on the South boundary in ST LAWRENCE CHURCHYARD, SWINDON VILLAGE.

 

 

HOWMAN Henry Roger

Major, 13th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action at Kemmel, Belgium between 25 and 26 April 1918. Aged 40. Buried in PERTH CEMETERY (CHINA WALL), Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. Row G. Grave 25.

WEBB Albert [Charles]

Private 95820, 160th Labour Company, Labour Corps formerly 25619, 11th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment). Died 6 months after being invalided out of the army on a disability pension 28 October 1918. Discharged under para 392 (xvi) King's Regulation being no longer physically fit for war service caused by a "Disordered Action of Heart" that first occured December 1917 on the Cambrai Front. Admitted to Northern General Hospital, Lincoln, 4 January 1918. Discharged at Nottingham 27 April 1918. Aged 33. Height 5 feet 8 inches, pale complexion, light brown eyes, brown hair, a Groom by trade, intended place of residence Swindon, near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Originally enlisred 5 June 1916 in Bristol, aged 30 years 10 months, married, a Groom by trade, height 5 feet 6 inches, weight 136 lbs, chest 37½-39½ inches. Served in France 24 July 1916 to 5 January 1918. Married Louise Roberts at St Mark's, Cheltenham 8 June 1907, two sons. Posted 11th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment) 6 June 1916, transferred to Labour Corps 9 May 1917, posted 160th Company 10 May 1917.In the 1891 census he was aged 6, born Swindon, Gloucestershire, son of James and Ellen Webb, resident Swindon Hall, Hayden Court, Swindon, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. In the 1911 census he was aged 26, born Gloucestershire, a Groom gardener, married to Louisa with one son, resident near Pump Swindon, Cheltenham, Uckington Swindon, Gloucestershire

CORKE Hubert William

Second Lieutenant, "C" Company, 10th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action on 19 April 1916 in the Hulloch area of France. Aged 21. His parents, Rev. Hubert Alfred Corke and Louisa Alice Corke resided at the Swindon Village Rectory. Buried in MAROC BRITISH CEMETERY, GRENAY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot I. Row A. Grave 5. He is also commemorated on the Cheltenham Borough War Memorial, the St Mark's Church Roll of Honour, the Swindon Village War Memorial, the Grammar School Roll of Honour and the Holy Apostles Church Roll of Honour.

CANNOCK George Lumbard

Sergeant 165298, 6th Dragoons (Inniskilling). Killed in action in France on 8 August 1918. Aged 24. Enlisted Bath, resident Cheltenham. Son of Eleanor Robinson (formerly Cannock), of Quilon Villa, Prestbury Rd., Cheltenham, and the late Thomas Cannock. Formerly 924, North Somerset Yeomanry. Buried in the LE QUESNEL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. Row A. Grave 44. Commemorated on the grave of his parents in St Lawrence Churchyard Swindon Village. He is listed on the Cheltenham Borough War Memorial and on the Staverton (St Catherine's Church) Roll of Honour.

KEYTE William Henry Nelson

Private, 10th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment/ Died of illness 25 October 1918. At the time of his death his parents, Mr and Mrs William Keyte, resided at "Woodbines", Swindon Village. They had previously resided at 4 Swindon Road, Cheltenham. Buried 30 October 1918 in St LAWRENCE CHURHCYARD, SWINDON VILLAGE. Burial number 772. He is commemorated on the St Peter's Church War Memorial. Pte Keyte's burial is not recorded on the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC but action is in hand to present a case to the MOD/CWGC for his commemoration.

WINSTONE Charles Gordon

Private 2234, 4th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. Killed in action in the Festubert area of France on 18 May 1915. Enlisted and resident Invernessshire. His father, Mr Gordon Arthur Winstone, resided at "Ewlyn", Leckhampton Road, Cheltenham. No known grave. Commemorated on LE TOURET MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 41 and 42. Commemorated on his father's grave in St Lawrence Churchyard Swindon Village. He is also commemorated on the Cheltenham Borough War Memorial, the Grammar School Roll of Honour, the Leckhampton War Memorial and on the Leckhampton (St Peter's Church) Roll of Honour.
