                30th 1917:
                Fatal
Accident to Flight Lieut. MELVILLE ALLEN.

Bedford learned with deep sorrow and regret last week on Wednesday,
Lieut. Melville Richard Agnew Allen of the R.F.C. (Royal Flying
Corps) only son of Mr Richard Allen and grandson of Mr W.H. Allen
had met with a fatal accident while flying near Ipswich. There
were few young men so popular and beloved as Mr Allen in Bedford,
where his bright and sunny disposition will long be remembered.
It was only about six weeks ago since he flew from King’s
Lynn to Bedford, and his arrival and descent was watched by large
numbers of townsfolk. He was an instructor and an intrepid aviator.
                 For
his high character and good nature he was regarded with the greatest
affection by the family, and held in the highest esteem by his
many friends and the firm’s workspeople. In August 1915
he married a daughter of Major Lightfoot of the Bedford Depot. At
the inquest on Saturday at Ipswich it was stated that when Mr
Allen was flying at a height of 150 feet and was ascending, the
engine stopped and the machine crashed to the ground, Mr Allen
succumbing in a few hours to the injuries he had received. The
                stoppage of the engine was due to too much or too little oil;
the engine was all right just before the flight. |
