From
a roll compiled by Caroline Burkitt that can be found in Cambridge
Library, reference section: Jo
Blogg was born in Cheddington, Buckinghamshire on 25th September
1881. Why his parents were living there is a mystery. His father
Joseph Nicholas Blogg, came from Southrepps, near Cromer, on the
Norfolk Coast, and although it has not been possible to trace
his ancestry with complete certainty, there are records of Bloggs
having lived around the Cromer area from 1750. At the turn of
the century Joseph and his wife, Sophia, came to live in Metron
house cottage, Grantchester, and Joseph was a gardener, first
to Mr. William Bateson, the great exponent of Mendelism, and,
after 1911 to Mr. Lister. Jo came with them and took a job as
college shoe black at Downing. There he met Rose Squires, the
widow of a hairdresser in East Road, and a bedder at the colege,
and they married in 1907. For a while they lived in Broad Street
and later moved to 56, Catherine Street. Their children, Gladys
and Percy were born in 1907 and 1910. After the outbreak of war,
Jo was called up into the 1/1st Cambridgeshire Regiment as a stetcher
bearer and was sent to France. On 25th April 1918 he won the Military
Medal at Voormezeele, for gallantry in the field. His twin brother
William was also in France, and although not serving together,
on the morning of 28th August 1918, they were both wounded within
half an hour of each other. William survived after his leg was
amputated, but Jo died of his wounds on 4th September. His son
vividly remembers that day , his mother was cleaning a gas lamp
at their home in Catherine Street when the telegram arrived. Jo
is buried in Daours Communal Cemetery Extension in France, and
as well as being remembered in Grantchester, his name is on the
war memorial in St.Philips church, Thoday Street. On 24th November
1918, a memorial service was held in Grantchester church for Jo
Blogg, Joseph Greygoose and William Wilson. |

CAMBS.
ROLL OF HONOUR.
Mrs.
Gladwell, of 41, Lucy-road, Cambridge, has received official intimation
that her husband, Pte. W. T. Gladwell, of the Cambridgeshire Regt.,
was killed in action on October 31st. A letter from the officer
of the Company states: “He was struck in the head by a piece
of shrapnel and died immediately. He was attended to at once by
a doctor who was just near him, but states that his death was
instantaneous. I am afraid that no Ietter of mine can offer you
consolation in your great loss, but please accept my sincere sympathy
with you and your family. He was a soldier in a thousand and a
very faithful servant to me, and as you know. I had a verv high
opinion of him. . . He will be buried to-morrow morning in a cemetery
just near here, a few graves away from my great friend, Lieutenant
Bradford.” Pte. Fred Atkin, of the Herts. Regt., a friend
of Pte. Gladwell, says in a letter: "Dear Mrs. Gladwell,
I wish you to accept the joint sympathy of all the men attached
to the headquarters, together with my own, in the recent death
of your husband, Bill. That he was popular with all goes without
saying, it would not be otherwise and though his death is a keen
pe..al to… to each of us, I expect …………
in our work. He had a fitting funeral as could be … and
was spared suffering of pain, which will afford you some comfort
to know, as it did us. In this time of great trial to you as to
many like you. We kindly hope you will meet with the strength
and bravery of a good British woman, and God will bless you and
the little ones for enduring much for His sake. We know and feel
you will … this trial bravely, it is just what Bill would
himself wish you to do." Pte. Gladwell, who was 29 years
of age, was in the Territorial Force when war broke out, and went
out with the first detachment. He had been twice wounded. Before
the War he was employed for about eight years at the Saxon Cement
Works.

SEC.-LIEUT.
W. P. HUMPHREY, CAMBRIDGE
We learn with extreme regret of the death of Sec.-Lieut. W. Pryor
Humphrey, of the London Regiment, which occurred on May 28. He
joined the Cambs. Regiment in 1914, and went to France in February,
1915, where he was for more than two years. He afterwards gained
a commission in the London Regiment, and returned to France on
April 19 of this year. Lieutenant Humphrey was 29 years of age
and married. The local Press say of him: "Lieut. Humphrey's
fine character and lovable personality had won him many friends
in the town." This was especially true in regard to the T.A.
Coming from Watford (Chesham section), he helped in the formation
of the Cambridge Branch, and always took a keen interest in its
doings. He will be sadly missed by his fellow members, by whom
he was held in the greatest esteem and respect, his upright, honourable
character and conduct being recognised by all. He was truly "one
of the best."

Extract
from a local paper (unknown paper and date):
"DIED
LIKE A MAN."
Cambridge Lancer Killed In
Action.
Mr.
and Mrs. Kerry of 275, Mill-road. Cambridge, have received news
of the death of their son, Corporal Walter Birbeck Kerry, of the
16th Lancers, who was mortally wounded in action at Le Glairet.
The sad news conveyed to them in the following letter from Squadron-Sergeant
A. V. Cobb. of the same regiment:
“Just
a few lines to let you know that poor Walter passed away on the
8th, the day before yesterday. I was with him on patrol when he
was shot, and fetched him back. Poor young Horlock, of Cambridge,
was thrown from his horse and hurt at the same time, but he is
not seriously injured. Walter was shot about one o'clock, and
died about 4.30 p.m. He was conscious up to the finish I was not
with him when he died but the two fellows who were with him told
me he had a very respectable funeral. He was buried by the side
of Lieut. Gough, of the R.A. He was shot and buried at a place
called Le Glairet. When I left him he told me to tell you all
at home and his young lady that his last thoughts were of you
all, and that he died like a man. I cannot explain all to you
in this letter, but if I should live to return to Cambridge to
see you and let you know all. I daresay you heard Walter speak
of me. I live at Palgrave, just outside, Diss, and I know your
brother well who lives at Diss. I cannot explain any more now,
but will see you if I should be spared. I will close with deepest
sympathy, remaining yours respectfully, A. V. Cobb.

PRIVATE
L. L. MILLER, CAMBRIDGE.
It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death of Private
L. L. Miller (Liverpool Regiment), a prominent member of the Cambridge
Branch, who died of wounds in the 3rd General Australian Hospital,
Abbeville, on September 30. Private Miller (who was 30 years of
age, and leaves a widow and one child) was one of the original
few who joined the Cambridge Branch on its inception nine years
ago. He had always been one of its most respected and enthusiastic
members and held office both as president and vice-president.
He was home on leave only a few weeks before his death, and was
looking forward eagerly to renew his acquaintance with the branch
and its activities. Private Miller was employed as a compositor
at Messrs. W. Heifer and Sons, and he will be greatly missed by
all the members of the staff, with whom he was deservedly popular.
He joined the colours under the Derby scheme in September, 1916,
and had been in France about 15 months at the time of his death.
