HYTHE
WAR MEMORIAL
World
War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © David Hughes and Neil Clark 2006
The
Hythe War Memorial has in the past suffered from vandalism. In the
1994 the bronze winged angle was stolen and had to be replaced at
great cost by Hythe Town Council.
Like
most town and village war memorials Hythe has a significant number
of its victims of both world wars not commemorated, and whilst not
meriting special mention over and above all the other Hythe citizens
that lost their lives, it does seem odd that 33 year old Commander
Rupert Arnold Brabner D.S.O, D.S.C, M.P, RNVR the Member of Parliament
for Hythe is amongst their number. He died when the Liberator aircraft
taking him to Canada was lost off the Azores on Tuesday 27th March
1945 and is commemorated on the Lee-on-Solent Memorial. Bay 6. Panel
2.
The
memorial itself stands in The Grove, Prospect Road, Hythe and is in
the form of a small winged victory holding a small version of a medieval
cinque port vessel while standing on an orbb with mosaic relief. The
supporting column is square in shape with a carving showing twelve
servicemen. There is a lion's head on each side at the base that were
originally fountains. The names from both World Wars are listed on
a wall behind the memorial, there are 154 names for World War 1 and
40 names for World War 2. The memorial was unveiled on 16th July 1921
by Earl Beauchamp and the dedication was by local clergy and other
dignitaries. The memroial cost £450 and the sculptor was Mr.
Gilbert Bayes. Reports of the unveiling are to be found in "The
Hythe Reporter" of 16th and 23rd July 1921. Reports of the stolen
angel appeared in the "Kentish Express" 28th April and 18th
August 1994.
