Note:
On 28 October 1915, the troopship H.M.S. Hythe was sunk approaching
the Dardanelles. H.M.S. Sarnia, another troopship steaming away from
shore after disembarking her troops, collided with the Hythe, which
went down in ten minutes. The Hythe was sailing without lights in order
to avoid detection by Turkish batteries on the shore. There were 275
men on board including crew, and 154 of them drowned in the Aegean Sea,
of which 131 of these were men of the 1st/3rd Kent Field Company, Royal
Engineers, from Tunbridge Wells, Southborough, and the surrounding region;
one other man was rescued but died and is buried in Mudros Cemetery.
Twenty-four of them are named on Southborough
War Memorial. For further information see The Sinking of HMS
Hythe - 28 October 1915.
If
it is still in print then there was a book "Southborough Sappers
of the Kent (Fortress) Royal Engineers by F. A. Stevens, published March
2000.

Volunteering
in May 1915, and having completed his training was en route
to Gallipoli on board H.M.S. "Hythe," when the
vessel was torpedoed and sunk on October 28th, 1915, and
he was drowned. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and
the General Service and Victory Medals. |

Note:
In actual fact he died when HMS Hythe and HMS Sarnia collided.
There was no torpedo. Hythe was on her way into Cape Helles, Sarnia
was coming out empty. Despite last minute course corrections,
both ships were going too fast and running without lights and
Sarnia hit Hythe in the middle. Sarnia was much bigger and had
just a hole above the water line. Hythe sank within 15 minutes.
Some lucky men managed to scramble from Hythe onto Sarnia.

Prior
to the war he was known as Reginald or Reggie to his family and
friends, the third David Salomons was brought up at Broomhill
and educated at Eton and at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge,
which had also been his father's college. He then started training
as a lawyer. After Cambridge he travelled widely; first to France,
Italy and Spain, and then to the East. In 1910 he and his cousin,
Arthur Paget, spent two and a half months exploring Japan, travelling
many hundreds of miles by train, horse, rickshaw, boat and on
foot. Arthur had previously travelled in Japan, and married there
in 1911. Reginald was greatly impressed by the people and the
scenery and, on his return to England, took lessons in Japanese
and established links with the Japanese consulate. Reginald wrote
an account of his travels, "An Outsider's Impression
of Japan", under the name R. Nagano. Although never
published, it gives an interesting description of the Japan of
1910 and of his reaction to the country and its peoples.

Obituary
from Jewish Chronicle Obituary - 19 November 1915:
THE
LATE CAPT. SALOMONS.
As we briefly announced
last week. Capt. Reginald Phillip Salomons 1/3rd Kent Field Company,
R.E,. who went down with over 100 officers and men in the foundering
of H.M.S. "Hythe," was the only son of Sir David and
Lady Salomons, of Broomhill. Tunbridge Wells. Only those who were
intimately acquainted with him, says the Tunbridge Wells Advertiser,
knew how very near his heart the welfare of his men was. but everyone
was cognisant of what he had done to make the Southborough Company
a succes. He was a keen organiser, one of his most notable achievements
being to found a Cadet Corps to act as a supply to the parent
Regiment. In this respect it may safely be assumed that nobody
will miss Capt. Salomons more than the boys, although it is satisfactory
to learn that Sir David has decided to perpetuate his son's memory
by continuing the Cadet Corp. Heir to the baronetcy, Capt. Salomons
was an M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, and received his Captaincy
in the Kent Fortress Engineers just over a year ago. He was thirty
years of age.
In the course of a letter to the Editor of the above-quoted journal,
Sapper Perry writes: The men who had not left the ship were all
huddled up in the stern, and one after another you could see them
drop off like flies into the water. Altogether about 140 went
down. and among them, I am sorry to relate, was our Captain. Capt.
D. R. Salomons, who was beloved by his men. He stood on the bridge
to the last with the Sergt.-Major of our Company, and went down
with the ship.
